Solar Energy
Solar
energyis
radiantlightandheatfrom
thesunharnessed using a range of ever-evolving
technologies.
The irradiance at the earths surface is about
1000W/m2 and the daily average irradiance is
approximately 250W/m2.
The light energy(for Si PV cells, <1100nm) is
harnessed by the solar PVs using the photoelectric
effect.
The heat from the sun is harnessed using the solar
thermal collectors.

Solar Rooftops
Solar Photovoltaic modules or more commonly known as
solar rooftops convert solar radiation between certain
wavelengths directly into electricity using the
photovoltaic effect, hence used in Green Buildings to
generate clean energy and reduce energy consumption
from the grid.
Thephotovoltaic effectrefers to photons of light
exciting electrons in a semiconductor into a higher state
of energy, allowing them to act as charge carriers for an
electric current
Solar PVs help in decentralized power generation which
can prevent blackouts.
Rooftops are a better choice for buildings in operation

Solar Rooftops
Besides
generating
clean
energy it also reduces potential
land use.
Currently, the higher range of
performance for Si cells is
around 19-20%, and thin film
products
are
around
10%
efficient.
The efficiency of the PV modules
increases with increase in solar
insolation but decreases with
increase in temperature and
vice versa.

Building Integrated PV

Building Integrated PV or BIPV is a

technology in which solar PVs are used
to replace the building material in parts
of the building envelope like roof,
skylights or facades.
Although it also reduces potential land
use the advantage of integrated
Photovoltaics over more common nonintegrated systems is that the initial cost
can be offset by reducing the amount
spent on building materials and labor
that would normally be used to construct
the part of the building that the BIPV
modules replace.
BIPVs make a better choice for buildings
under construction as they also save a
significant part of the material cost.

Solar Water Heater

A solar water heater is a device that uses

solar energy to provide hot water by
absorbing the solar radiation and passing it
on to the fluid(water).
Solar
water
heaters
are
remarkable
alternatives for geysers in buildings as they
are renewably powered.
There are two types of solar heat collectors,
i.e. Flat Plate Collectors and Evacuated Tube
Collectors.
Flat Plate Collectors are less efficient than the
Evacuated tube collectors.
The efficiency of the collectors increases with
solar insolation and decreases with increase
in the operating temperature.
We analyze the building requirement and
suggest the right size and quality of the
collectors as collectors come in different sizes
(volume) .

Solar Water Pumps

A solar water pump is a device that uses solar energy to
pump water.
It consists of a PV panel, a controller and a pump.
Solar Water Pumps can be used in buildings to fulfill the
water requirements of the tenants without using the grid
electricity.
Although with varying solar irradiance water supply may
vary but it is a very good option for areas with unavailability
of electricity or insufficient electrical supply.

Solar Street Lights

We also provide Solar LED street lighting systems
that are highly energy efficient and require very
less maintenance.
The ANU has installed 40 Watt LED Lights at sports
stadium, solar street lights and LED lights powering
the roads leading to hostels of engineering
colleges.
