Lesson Objectives
Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to:

Discuss the different types of RF optimization

parameters.

Explain attributes associated with BSC static datafill.

Explain attributes associated with BTS static datafill.
Explain the concepts of PN planning concerning the
reduction of co-channel and adjacent channel PN
interference.

Explain the process of initial neighbor list generation.

1202 CDMA RF Optimization - 2

Types of RF Optimization Parameters

Parameters can
be classified by
the source of
reference from
which they are
found.

IS-95/JSTD-008 Parameters
Defined in the CDMA standards documents.
Designated by ALL_UPPER_CASE with
underscores. For example - T_ADD
Usually sent to the mobile to control the
mobiles actions

Nortel Networks Specific Parameters

Outlined in the Network Management Interface
System (NMIS) documents.
Designated by UpperCaseOfEachWord with
no underscores. For example - QuickRepeat
Always used directly by Nortel Networks
infrastructure.

1202 CDMA RF Optimization - 3

Types of RF Optimization Parameters

Parameters can
be classified by
what effect they
have on the
system.

Global Parameters
These parameters apply to an entire network.
Any changes made at the BSC or MTX will
affect the operation associated with that BSC
or MTX.

Sector Specific Parameters

These parameters apply only to a specific
sector(s) within a network.
When a mobile is in soft handoff with more
than one sector, the safer value is sent from
the SBS to the mobile.

1202 CDMA RF Optimization - 4

Types of RF Optimization Parameters

Parameters can
also be
classified by
where in the
system they are
datafilled.

BTS Datafilled Parameters

Values are communicated to the mobile on the
sync and paging channels during idle state.
If a call is started, the mobile uses the parameter
settings it received from the last sector where it
was idle until they are overwritten.

BSC Datafilled Parameters

Values are communicated to the mobile on the
forward traffic channel.
The SBS constantly updates the mobile with new
parameter values as the mobile acquires new
sectors.
Note: Many parameters are datafilled at both the BSC and BTS.

Setpoint

Consists of power up (0) and power down (1) commands sent to the mobile

Each command requests a 1dB increment or decrement of the mobile

station transmit power

Transmitted 800 times per second, always at full power

PN Offset Planning
PN plan should
be in place
before
optimization
begins.

Co-Channel PN Interference
Condition where two sectors have the same PN
offset and are close enough for the mobile to
mistakenly see a signal from one of the sectors
as a multipath of the other.

Adjacent Channel PN Interference

Condition where two sectors are using different
PN offsets, but the mobile is located in an area
where the two different PNs seem the same due
to the amount of delay associated with each.

Initial Neighbor List Generation

Do not add sites
just in case.
The idea is to
limit the
neighbor lists in
order to reduce
search times.

An initial neighbor list can be generated

as follows:
In the prediction tool, generate a best server Ec/Io
plot.
For each sector, create a neighbor list consisting
of those sectors with which it shares a common
boundary.
Sort these lists according to the boundary length
and traffic patterns so that the most logical
transitions appear earlier in the list.

During this lesson, we:

Discussed the different types of RF optimization

parameters.

Explained attributes associated with BSC static datafill.

Explained attributes associated with BTS static datafill.
Explained the concepts of PN planning concerning the
reduction of co-channel and adjacent channel PN
interference.

Explained the process of initial neighbor list generation.
