Devotional

Philippians 2: 1-8
“If you have any encouragement from being
united with Christ, if any comfort from his
love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any
tenderness and compassion, then make
my joy complete by being like-minded,
having the same love, being one in spirit
and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish
ambition or vain conceit, but in humility
consider others better than yourselves.
Each of you should look not only to your
own interests, but also to the interests of
others.”
“Your attitude should be the same as that of
Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God
something to be grasped,
but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!”
PRIDE VS. HUMILITY
Selfishness destroys relationships Selflessness builds them
Selflessness brings out the best in others
It is human nature to be selfish (Philippians 2:4)
Selfishness destroys teamwork God has favorite places to teach
EGO stands for Edging God Out selflessness
God rewards selflessness (Galatians 6:7,8)

Pride destroys relationships Humility builds them

Humility helps us live in harmony (1 Peter
Pride leads to arguments (Proverbs 13:10) 3:8)
Pride is very self-deceiving (Proverbs Humility opens the way for us to change
16:18) our way of thinking (Ephesians 4:23-24)
Humility gives honor to others (1
Philippians 2:3, 5-6)
Insecurity destroys relationships Love builds them
The fear of human opinion disables Perfect love expels all fear (1 John 4:18)
(Proverbs 29:25) Love brings an honest view of “self” (1
Insecurity prevents intimacy Corinthians 13:4,5)
Resentment destroys relationships Forgiveness builds them
When you get resentful you stop thinking
clearly (Psalm 73) Forgiveness is letting go of the past and
Watch out that no resentment takes root letting go of my right to get even.
(Hebrews 12:15)
Humble Servants
Servanthood + Humility

Pride says (or self-conceited person), “What’s in it for

me?”

Humility says,
“What can I do for you?”

HUMILITY IS NECESSARY FOR UNITY IN THE BODY.

UNITY IS NECESSARY FOR THE PROGRESS OF THE
GOSPEL.
MUTUAL SERVICE, LOVE, AND HUMILITY MAKE UP A
STRONG CHURCH READY TO TAKE ON ITS
CULTURE WITH THE GOSPEL.
