Analysis of

horror survey

Purpose of the questionnaire

The purpose of the horror survey was to give my group an insight of
who our target audience would be. As our research and planning was
based on creating a horror opening to make sure we had a clear
understanding of what an audience look for in a horror film, we
created this questionnaire to enable that we were aware of what this
was. In our questionnaire, we included important questions such as;
what is your favourite horror subgenre? What is your favourite
location for a horror film? What kind of characters you like to see?
And, what type of effects do you look for in a horror film?

Question 1
Our first question asked
How old are you?
76.92% of respondents
answered the question
with an answer of 16-18
years old we also received
responses of 18-20 with
15.38% and 21+ with
7.69%. From looking at
these results, we can
instantly see that the
majority of respondents
fall into the age range of
16-18. The results from
this particular question
allows us to know what
the age rating should be
when it comes to the
creation of our horror
opening.

Question 2
The second question
asked What is your
gender? 69.23% of
respondents answered
the question selecting
female, 15.38% answered
with male and other.
Due to the results from
this question, in our
horror opening we have
decided to have a female
lead as well as a male
lead character. This will
enable us to ensure our
horror opening appeals to
both genders rather than
just one.

Question 3
The third question asked
Do you enjoy watching
horror movies? We
received a majority of the
response occasionally
which was the answer from
46.15% of respondents.
The next answer which
obtained the next highest
percentage was yes which
received 30.77% and no
which got 23.08%.

Question 4
Number 4 asked Which horror subgenre do
you like the most? On this question we
received a variety of responses. The choices
and overall outcome was comedy horror
45.45%, vampire horror 18.18%, body
horror 27.27%, psychological horror 63.64%,
monster horror 18.18%, slasher horror
18.18%, teen slasher horror 0% and
demonic horror 36.36%.
As there are many subgenres of horror films,
although most horror films do focus on more
than one subgenre we only wanted to focus
on one. The answer we received the highest
response was for Psychological horror. As we
are creating a horror opening, we are going
t incorporate a psychological atmosphere
within the 2 minutes of the opening.

Question 5
Roughly, how often do you go to the cinema? The
answer choices were:

More than once a week 7.69%

Once a week 0%

2 - 3 times a month 23.08%

Once a month 7.69%

Once every 3 months 23.08%

Once every 6 months 7.69%

Once a year 7.69%

Less than once a year 7.69%

No at all 15.38%
The highest response was from the answers 2-3
months and once every 3 months. This questions
tells us that if we were to release our horror film
how many views it would get, from this question
we can see that our audience do not go to the
cinema very often which means that we would
not get many viewers for our film.

Question 6
How many horror films do you watch weekly?
0 -2 46.15%
3 5 15.38%
6 8 15.38%
9+ 23.08%
Never 0%
As the results from this question states that the
audience do not watch horror films very often, we
know that it will be easy for us to scare our audience
which is the purpose of horror films. From this, we
can tell that our audience does not like horror films
which could be due to them being too much of a cliff
hanger or they may not like the tension which is
continuously shown throughout the film.

Question 7
What type of location would be best suited for a
horror film? The options that this question had were
1. School 15.38%
2. Forest 7.69%
3. Abandoned house 46.15%
4. Graveyards 0%
5. Isolated town/road 23.08%
6. Basement 0%
7. Isolated road 0%
8. Hotel 7.69%
Due to receiving a majority answer of an
abandoned house as the best location suited for a
horror film, we are going to film our horror opening
in this location or something similar. An audience
may want an abandoned house as the location for a
horror film because as it is abandoned there may be
other characters and creatures that may live there
which cold bring tension and a build up for the
audience.

Question 8
What kind of characters would you like to see in a horror
film?
1. Damsel in distress 63.64%
2. Zombies 54.55%
3. Vampires 45.45%
4. Adults 27.27%
5. Dumb blonde 9.09%
6. Families 36.36%
7. Teenagers 45.45%
8. Stalkers 45.45%
9. Ghosts 72.73%
This multiple choice question is one of the most important
question which had been asked in this questionnaire. As
our horror opening is only to be 2 minutes, we have to
make sure that we include specific characters. Due to our
limited amount of time, we cannot choose all characters
which have been selected the most for the answer to this
question; this is as if we choose ghosts, zombies, damsel
in distress and vampires this will become confusing for the
audience and our horror opening will just be a mess.

Question 9
What would you like to see in an opening of a horror
film?

Death 36.36%

Suspense 90.91%

Dramatic build up 81.82%

Eerie silence 72.73%

Cliff hangers 36.36%

This question was another multiple choice question,
we allowed the respondents to choose more than one
answer as in most horror films there is a range of
effects which are included in the opening and we
wanted to make sure we knew exactly what our
audience wanted to see.
From these results, we can see that the most common
answers are suspense, dramatic build up and eerie
silence. As this is what the audience want we are
going to make sure that these effects are included in
our horror opening.

Conclusion
Due to creating a survey, this has allowed us to form a target
audience for our horror opening. The questionnaire has enabled us to
know what gender our horror opening is going to be aimed at, what
subgenre it should be, where it should be filmed, what type of
characters we should include, lastly, the age group of our audience
who will be viewing our horror opening. By conducting a
questionnaire, it has allowed us to obtain results quickly and easily
which means we can focus our time on what the audience want to
see rather than spending it individually asking each person their
preference of a horror film opening.
