Business Strategy
]We recognised in the year 2000 that, in
the future, biotechnology-based
products, such as biopolymers, biofuels,
and biochemicals could undermine
Reliance's position in its traditional
businesses. When we did a detailed
analysis, it struck us that, while the K V Subramaniam
threat from industrial biotechnology was President and CEO,
more in the medium to long term, there Reliance Life
were opportunities in the medical Sciences explains,
biotechnology and plant biotechnology
domains. This is how Reliance came to
be engaged with the life sciences
initiative and Reliance Life Sciences
came into being in the year 2001.]
h Reliance GeneMedix plc, a UK-based subsidiary of
Reliance Life Sciences with a manufacturing facility in
Ireland, is developing biosimilars for the European market.

h Reliance Institute of Life Sciences is a not-for-profit

organisation, sponsored by the Dhirubhai Ambani
Äoundation, focusing on competency development in
Biotechnology, not only for Reliance Life Sciences but also
for the industry. The Institute offers a wide range of
competency development programs and diploma programs
in Biotherapeutics and Clinical Research.
Heart Of RLS
hThe flagship facility is DALC in Navi Mumbai. DALC is among the
most diverse and integrated life sciences campuses in the world.

h The second facility is in Bangalore, for clinical pharmacology and

clinical data management.

h RLS also has a pilot facility for manufacture of clinical lots and initial
market introduction of Plasma Proteins and Recombinant Therapeutic
Proteins in Mumbai, a facility for commercial scale manufacture of
Plasma Proteins at DALC, Navi Mumbai and R&D farms in Kakinada,
Nagothane and Gandhar to develop composite varieties of Jatropha for
the bio-fuel venture.

h RLS also offers contract biopharmaceutical manufacturing services.

Corporate Social
Responsibility
h Reliance Lifesciences has provided viral load testing (which
determines the stage of HIV infections) at a subsidized cost.

h Reliance Institute Of Life Sciences (RILS) offers a wide

range of competency development programs and diploma
programs in Biotherapeutics and Clinical Research.

h DALC bulding makes optimum use of natural light and is in

fact a huge greenhouse, with many plants from the Group¶s
tissue culture labs.
Äuture Strategy
h Reliance Life Sciences to set up $106.4 million data centre
The Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Life Sciences is likely to set up a
world-class clinical data management (CDM) centre at a cost of
approximately $106.4 million (Rs 5,000 million). This is in line with
company¶s plan to become a fully integrated player in the global clinical
research space. The CDM centre will have a team of 100 scientific and
software professionals and will take up in-house and client-based
outsourcing projects.

h Reliance Biofuels Private Limited

The biofuels initiative is a 100% subsidiary of RLS. It incorporate
principles based on using marginal land and staying away from fertile
land used for food crops; working with marginal farmers to help improve
quality of rural livelihoods and incomes; promoting multi-culture
agronomy and building a business that is robust to low prices of crude oil.
The components of the biofuels initiative include Agronomy, Äarm
Advocacy, Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Metabolic Engineering, Trans-
esterification, Enzymology and Industrial Biotechnology.

Business Prospects Of Biofuel
are Promising
. What are the future prospects of biofuel as an alternative to
nonrenewable fuel?
A. Biofuel is poised for a big leap in the future and if the challenges of
economics, scale up and logistics are being adequately addressed. A
crucial factor in the progress of biofuel would be successful
commercialization of second generation biofuel. This could witness the
biofuel replacing a substantial quantity of nonrenewable fuel.

. How is the global demand for biofuel? Can you give some statistical
information on the Indian biofuel market?
A. In 2008, the global biofuel usage was about 1.66 percent of the total
conventional fuel used. Currently, bioethanol is a predominant contributor
to the biofuels market with over 85 percent market share. The Indian
biofuels market is at a nascent stage. About 150 to 200 tonnes of ethanol
is used annually for fuel blending in India. Statistics on use of biodiesel is
not available as it is mostly distributed through unorganized means.
. What are the key areas of focus for Reliance Industries on the biofuel
front? What are the major R&D initiatives taken by your company?
A. Reliance is developing an India-centric, global biofuels initiative
covering biodiesel, from jatropha and other non-food oil seed crops;
bioethanol, from cellulosic biomass and biobutanol, from cellulosic
biomass.
Reliance has successfully grown jatropha along with horticulture and
medicinal intercrops. It has also developed high-yielding hybrid varieties of
jatropha and a plant tissue culture protocol for jatropha. Reliance has
commissioned a 6,500 tonnes per year pilot plant in Kakinada, Andhra
Pradesh, for biodiesel production and developed second-generation
processes for production of bioethanol and biobutanol at a lab scale.
. How is the business potential of biofuel industry?
A. Business prospects of biofuel do look very promising. There is a vast
amount of waste land, which is not being cultivated by farmers in India. If
this potential is tapped, biofuel could contribute to alleviating our energy
security concerns.
