Carbapenem resistance

PRESENTER : Dr. AISHIYA

1

Carbapenems are a class

of beta-lactam antibiotics
with very broad activity

Lactam Antibiotics

Most widely prescribed

drugs

Penicillin

Monobactams
Carbepenems

Penicillins
betalactamases

Ist generation cepalosporins

2nd generation cephalosporins
3rd generation cephalosporins
Extended spectrum
betalactamases

- Lactam Inhibitors & CARBEPENEMS

Resistance

BACTERIAL RESISTANCE
Even in presence of antimicrobials, if

pathogenic microorganisms is multiplying

treatment outcome is compromised.
This phenomenon is referred to as antimicrobial
resistance (AMR).

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

Resistant bacteria survive, susceptible ones die

Mutant emerges
slowly

Sensitive cells
killed by antibiotic

Mutants progeny
overrun

Porins are a class of outer membrane protein (OMP)

Porins are involved in the exchange of nutrients ,

also allows the antibiotics to enter the cell

A Positive HMT test

MHT Positive test has a

clover leaf-like
indentation of the E.coli
25922 growing along
the test organism
growth streak within
the disk diffusion zone.
A positive MHT
indicates that this
isolate is producing a
carbapenemase
32

A Negative HMT Test

MHT Negative test has no growth of the

E.coli 25922 along the test organism

growth streak within the disc diffusion.

A negative MHT indicates

that this isolate is not

producing a carbapenemase
