Notes were originally issued by
Reserve Bank of India in 1996.
Due to large counterfeit problems, RBI
decided to reform and redesign Indian
currency and re-launch it with new
advanced security features.

Why Gandhi on Indian

Currency notes ???
While redesigning the currency notes
many other names were considered like
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu,
Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Dr.
Ambedkar, Lokmanya Tilak and many
more.
Everyone other name than Mahatma
Gandhi raised political problems which
led them to select Mahatma Gandhi as a
sole person to be featured on the notes.

All those in support say :He is the man who led the fight of
independence. It was impossible for India
to achieve its freedom without Bapu.
There are a number of famous people but
all of them failed to impress a large
chunk of people as Bapu did.
Any kind of change made to currency at
this time will only create chaos and
political disorders in the country.

All those who oppose say :

There are many other freedom fighters who

contributed equally in the freedom fight of India.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak who was known as the
"Father of Indian Movement" worked as a social
reformer and laid the foundation of modern India.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was the world known leader
whose efforts for the development of India are
still admired. Why does he not deserve to be on
Indian notes?
The contributions of other revolutionaries
including Bhagat Singh in the national movement
cannot be ignored.

Why cannot the scenario

change???

Even if many other freedom fighters

have fought for our Freedom, they
cannot be featured as we have a very
diverse regions and cultures, and
featuring only a few out of many
probable names will be difficult and
controversial.

2. Maharashtra: Shivaji, B.R. Ambedkar
3. Tamil Nadu: Rajnikanth, M G Ramchandran

7. Punjab/Haryana: Bhagat Singh
8. West Bengal: Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit

9. Gujarat: Sardar Patel
