Criteria for designing the drivers cab:

1. Driver Comfort.
2. Practicality.
3. Aerodynamic performance.
4. Safety.
5. Space
6. Reduced weig
7. Ease of manufacture & assembly
8. Style

Aerodynamics:
Reduces fuel consumption
Reduces wind noise, improving driver comfort
Facilitates safe, predictable handling in side
winds

Safety:
Optimum visibility.
Comfortable and stress free driving.
Stability and predictable handling.
Dynamic styling for an assertive road presence

Practicality & first-class comfort:

Designing from the drivers point of view and paying
attention to every detail is important.
Space room to stand, move around, work & relax.
Climatic comfort provided by the integrated climate
control system Adjustable seating.
Low noise environment.
The spacious interior requirements:
Abundant storage space.
Walk-through cab.
Multifunction bunk for use as a bed, high-level storage
or comfortable seating

Drivers Cab Classification

Day Cab
Sleeper cab
Long distance Cab

Steering Wheel Requirements:

Hand wheel diameter (D)
Rim Wheel Diameter (d)
Displacement (M).

Seating:
Minimize the reflections coming from the wind
screen and cabin interior.
Reach ability of all controls.
Optimization length& height for smaller and
longer persons.
Length and height adjustments requirements.
Seat belt and head rest.
Seat Back inclination of 20 degrees.

Pedal Controls :
The design of accelerator brake pedal controls is subject to
a number of conditions like :
1.Vehicle structure 2.Cost. 3.Comfortable reach. 4.
Optimum force exertion Controls should be provided such
that operation should be made as stress free with less
effort possible.
Foot operated Controls:
Foot controls should provide fatigue free driving:
Sensitivity of operation:
Avoidance of wrong footing:
Rapid transfer of foot between accelerator and Brake.

Hand operated controls:

Comfortable access.
Controls should be grouped according to use.
Frequently used controls should be placed in the
main access area.
Controls should be designed for simplicity and
sensitivity without confusion.

Drivers Cab Terminology:

Cab designs are generally classified into following
two types:
1. Cab over engine (COE) or forward control
(FC) cab
2. Cab behind engine (CBE ) or normal control
(NC) cab or conventional cab
3. Cab or driver compartment

1. Cab over engine (COE) or forward control

(FC) cab :
This means a vehicle in which all or substantial
part of its engine is located under the cab i.e.
below driver and co-driver. Also in case of cab
over engine vehicles, the steering system
is positioned right at the front of the vehicle.

2. Cab behind engine (CBE ) or normal

control (NC) cab or conventional cab :
In cab-behind-engine vehicles, the engine
transmission assembly is mounted ahead
of the cab..

3. Cab or driver compartment :

The space intended for the driver's exclusive
use and contains driver seat, steering wheel,
controls, instruments and other devices necessary
for driving or operating the vehicle.
Different types of cabs are:

4.Short conventional cab : When compared to the

normal conventional cab,the short conventional cab has
a shortened hood and front fenders and the engine extends
into the cab area.
5. Sleeper cab : Truck with a sleeping compartment
in the cab and the cab is incorporating with the sleeper
berth for the driver/co-driver.
6. Tilt cab: Vehicle designed with the engine beneath
the cab and having provision for tilting the cab forward
to provide easy access to the engine.

7. Cab to axle of the frame (CA): The dimension

from the back of the cab to the centerline of the rear
axle. For the tandem axle trucks, the distance from
back of the cab to the centerline of the tandem cylinder.
8. Cab to end of the frame (CE): The dimension
from the back of the cab to the rear of the standard
frame.
9. Door means a sub system of a Truck cab body
that permits boarding and alighting for the driver and
crew members.

10.Window means an aperture in the side or

rear of the truck cab to let in light / air.
11. A pillar means a structural member
integrating the floor, waist rail (bottom of
windscreen panel) and roof.

Other requirements of Cab:

Climb facility :
1 The maximum height (a) from ground to top
surface of first step shall be 550 mm measured on
vehicle in unladen condition.
In addition, the following geometrical specifications
shall be fulfilled:
Minimum step width shall be 200 mm.
Minimum step depth shall be 80 mm.
Steps need be provided with anti-slip surface,

First aid box : First Aid kit containing items notified

under Rule 138(4) (d) of Central Motor Vehicle Rules,
1989 shall be provided in the truck cab.
