PART I
The Simple (Habitual) Present Tense
The Meaning of the simple present tense actions
that you do all the time
The Simple Tense is used to describe habitual
actions. Habitual actions are actions that we do all
the time. In the book, we will call the Simple
Present Tense the habitual Present tense.
Learning point
We use the habitual present tense to talk about
habits or repeated actions- things that we do again
and again (every day, every week, every month)
Examples :
I clean my room every weekend
I always get to work at 05:00
The students in my class always study hard for their tests.
I play cards with my friends every Friday night.
Habitual Present Tense Time Words ( Adverb of Frequency)
Study the habitual Present Tense time words in the chart below
Time words
Always -------- 100% --------- All of the time
Usually--------- 95% --------- most of the time
Often --------- 80% --------- frequently
Sometimes --- 40% --------- occasionally
Seldom -------- 5% ---------- almost never, rarely
Never --------- 0% ---------- none of the time
Every day, every week, every month, every year
We usually put time words I front of the Habitual Present Tense
sentences. We usually put time words with every (every day, every
week, etc.) at the end of the sentences.

Learning Point
We can also use the Present ProgressiveTense with time words such as this
week, this month, this semester, and this year to talk about
temporary actions that are in progress. However, the action may or may
not be happening right now (at the moment of speaking).
The sentences below are in the Present Progressive Tense, but the actions
are not happening right now.

Peter : Are you taking history this semester?

PART 3
The Difference Between the Habitual Present and the Present
Progressive Tense
HABITUAL ACTIONS AND TEMPORARY ACTIONS
HABITUAL ACTIONS
We use the Simple (Habitual) Present Tense to talk about
actions that we do again and again over a long period of time.
Example: 1. My friends and I start work at 7:30 every morning.
2. I always eat lunch at 12:00.
TEMPORARY ACTIONS
We use the Present Progressive Tense to talk about temporary
actions that will probably end soon. The actions are not
permanent.
Example: 1. We are reading page 119 right now.
2. The students are working in small groups now.

A Family Barbecue
In the picture, the sun is shining, and it is a beautiful summer afternoon. Mr. And
Mrs. Baxter and their three children, Mike, Tim, and Cathy, are in the backyard.
Mrs. Baxter is barbecueing hamburgers, hot dogs, and corn on the cob for the
family. Mr. Baxter usually barbecues, but today Mrs. Baxter is preparing the food.
Mr. Baxter is carrying a bag of groceries. He always does the grocery shopping on
the weekends.
Cathy and Tim are playing on the pool right now. They throw the beach ball to each
other. The always play in the pool on warm days.
Mike is talking to the neighbor about his new car. Mike is very proud of his car, and
he washes it almost every day.
During the summer, the Baxter always enjoy their weekends at home.
PART 4
Verbs Not Used in the Present Progressive Tense
NON-ACTIONS VERBS (VERBS THAT DO NOT SHOW ACTION)
We do not usually use non-actions vers in the Present
Progressive Tense. Non-action verbs are verbs that do not show
movement or physical activity. Non-action verbs are also called
non-progressive verbs.
We do not use the Present Progressive Tense with verbs that
do not show action. We usually use the Habitual Present Tense
with non-action verbs. Study the examples below.
Writing Assignment
September 9, 2014
Dear Susi,
In your letter two weeks ago, you asked me about my typical day here in
Indonesia. Well, my typical day is usually so busy. I wake up at 5 AM every
morning. I get up right away and pray. Then i help my mother to clean my
home. I sweep , wash dishes, and prepare our breakfast. Actually, i go to
campus at 11 AM, but if i have meeting with my organization, i have to go
early. I study at campus from 12.40 until 17.50. I am riding my motorcycle
by myself now. Im afraid at first. I go home around 6 PM, and arrive at 6.15.
Then i take a bath and pray. I seldom have dinner because im so lazy to do
it. Sometimes, i go to my bedroom and make some tasks from my lecturer.
At 10 PM, i take a rest a while and go to bed. As you can see, my life is so
busy! I hope to hear from you soon. Say hello to you mom and dad for me.
Sincerely,
Selly
