How to configure your PC to a local area network.

A local area network (LAN) is a


computer network that interconnects
computers within a limited area such
as a home, school, computer
laboratory, or office building, using
network media.

Two ways to connect to


LAN
1. Wired Media:
. UTP: length 100m speed:10Mbps to
1000Mbps
. STP: length 100m speed:10Mbps to
100Mbps
. Coaxial cable length:500 m speed:10 Mbps
to 100 Mbps
. Fiber-Optic
10 km and farther (single-mode)
100 Mbps to 100 Gbps (single mode)

2. Wireless media :
Wifi (Wireless fidelity )is a wireless
broadband connection that allows
you to connect to the internet
without using any cables

What youll need:


a wireless router
a computer with a built-in wireless
adaptor or a separate adaptor

To Check Network Adapter in


Windows Xp
Start->Settings->ControlPanel>Performance and Maintenance>Adminstrative Tools->Computer
Mgt->Device Manager->Network
Adapter

1) Attach the RJ-45 connector to the Ethernet network port on your PC.

If your intranet is not connected to


the Internet, any IP addressing can
be deployed. If direct (routed) or
indirect (proxy or translator)
connectivity to the Internet is
desired, there are two types of
addresses employed on the Internet,

public addresses and


private addresses

Private IP address range


The ranges and the amount of usable
IP's are as follows:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
Addresses: 16,777,216
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
Addresses: 1,048,576
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Addresses: 65,536

2) Right click on My Network Places icons


located on the desktop and in the popup menu
click on properties

3) In the new Window that appears, under the LAN or High-Speed internet, right on Local Area
Connection and select properties in the popup menu that appears.

4) In the local area connection dialog box that appears under the connection box,
scroll down and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties.

5) a)Click the option Use the following IP Address. Enter


the IP address to use.
b) Thereafter, enter the Subnet Mask and Default gateway.

Class D :Multicasting
Class E:Research and Experimental

c) Thereafter, enter the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server address.

Click OK to accept the changes or cancel to exit the setup

6) Check the option Show icon in notification area when connected and #click OK.
This will enable you to know if the local area connection is connected or disconnected.

To configure TCP/IP
settings
1) Click Start->Control Panel>select and double clickNetwork
and internet connections->select
and double click Network
Connections.
2) Double-click theLocal Area
Connectionicon; highlight
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) tab in
the Local Area Connection Properties
window that appears:

3) Double click it or clickProperties. The


TCP/IP Properties window will display.

4) Two ways to configure the TCP/IP protocol


a) SelectObtain an IP address automaticallyandObtain DNS Server address
automatically

Then clickOKto save setting.

b) Assigned manually
i) SelectUse the following IP address
If the routers LAN IP address is 192.168.1.1,
please type in IP address 192.168.1.x x is
from 2 to 253 , subnet mask 255.255.255.0,
and default gateway 192.168.1.1.
ii) SelectUse the following DNS server
addresses. And then type the DNS server IP
address, which should be provided by your
ISP. Finally remember to clickOKto save
settings.

Click OK to save and apply your


settings.

Click the button labeled 'Compose'.

HOW TO SEND AN EMAIL USING GMAIL

Open your Gmail account by


clicking on the gmail link on the
Google search page or by providing
URL as WWW.gmail.com in the
browser.
Login by entering the username
and password.

Then type the email address of the person you want to send the email to
in the box that says 'To'.
Type the email subject. The subject lets people know what the email is
going to be about.

Type your message in the big box below the subject


box.

Click the send button, which is


located above the 'To' box.
