Carnival

Information for Pilots

Addressed to pilots assigned to pilot a Carnival Cruise Vessel.

CBT Outline spec as proposal only, upd: 2016-03-02

The idea of a CBT for Pilots

In order to fully understand the work onboard Carnival cruise vessels a
CBT should prevent misunderstandings between the Pilot and the Bridge
team, make the master pilot exchange more easy, possible to skip
explanations of BRM principles and the conning options, and avoid that
the Pilot comes onboard and get confused, not understanding the
concept..
Procedure:
1. Register as a pilot at CSMART website.
2. Perform the CBT.
3. Get a receipt of passed CBT (certificate), and enter in the CSMART
database of CBT certified pilots.
4. Well onboard, during Pilot Exchange Briefing, the Pilot is identified as a
CBT-certified pilot check! (We understand each other!)
5. CBT-certified pilots regularly get CSMART news letters and lessons
learned.
6. Annually the CBT-certified pilot is invited (via eMail) to a refresh CBT.

Introduction
Dear Pilot,
The Carnival group has decided to
abandon the one man show. Too
many accidents and incidents has
forced us to this decision.
A consequence of this decision is
that we man our bridges with
several functions, plan our voyages
in detail and make sure that all
people involved is on the track and
that any mistake will be corrected in
due time.
We welcome you to pilot our ship.
We hope this short information will
make your job more easy and that
you will understand our bridge team
better.

Objectives

Avoid misunderstandings and

conflicts between the pilot and the
bridge team.

Enable the pilot to execute her/his

mission set out by the national
administration.

Enable the pilot to improve the

practical work on the bridge.

Encourage the supply of nautical

pre-planning material by ports and
pilot associations.

Questions

Carnival Voyage Planning

In order to make the team work

possible we have to make a detailed
voyage plan.
The voyage plan is made according
to a detailed instruction and will be
made from berth to berth.

The Voyage Planning Process

Sources of Nautical Information

The Voyage Planning

Officer brings numerous
sources of information
together.

The Content of the

Voyage Plan

The Voyage Plan is

divided into three
sections:

Departure

Sea Passage

Arrival

The elements included

are shown to the right.

Routes

The Voyage Plan will

result in a route laid out
in the ships ECDIS.
Wheel Over Lines
(WOL), and associated
indicators, marks and
limits will be included.
Depending on speed
ROT will be calculated.
Maximum allowed ROT
due to list will
addressed.

Manoeuvring

The Voyage Plan will also

result in a plan how to
manoeuvre to and from the
berth.

Nautical Information given by the Port

The better the information retrieved is, the easier pilot work will be. Optimum is that the
pilots passage plan is equal to the ships voyage plan.
Carnival therefore encourage all cruise ports to make distinct material available to be
downloaded before arrival. Ideal is to make routes approved by the Pilot Association
available for electronic download. That enables the bridge team to follow the same route
as the pilot use in her/his PPU.

The way of operating

our vessels are in
detail described in our
BRM Manual.

Carnival Bridge Functions

Carnival ships implement

bridge functions:

Operations Director

Navigator

Co-Navigator

Administrator

Helmsman

Lookout

The Charge and the Conn

The Navigator or the Pilot may have the Conn.

BRM Communication Principles

Following Communication Principles are imperative to abandon the one man show:

Closed Loop

Thinking Aloud

Challenge

Briefings

Debriefing

Closed Loop

Apply closed loop and be sure it fills its purpose.

Thinking Aloud

Communicate your intentions and your worries. Incorporate the bridge team into your plan
and make them a part of it.

Challenge

Be prepared and encourage to be challenged.

Pilot Exchange Briefing

The Pilot Exchange Briefing is just

one on numerous briefings. The
briefings are essential to make the
bridge team work together.

Debriefing

As a Pilot you will be invited to the de-briefing. Take the opportunity to contribute to our
system!

The Pilot

This is our instruction:

The role of the Pilot

From the Pilot view the Ships Voyage Plan and the cooperation with the bridge team must be
proven to fit the passage and the working principles of the port.
From the Ships view the Pilot must apply the BRM Communication Principles and contribute to
abandon the man show.
During the Pilot Exchange Briefing it will be agreed who will have the Conn.

Non-conformance
We welcome you to pilot our ship. We will always do our best to follow your expertise
and incorporate it to our plan.
But we have to understand and agree to your intentions. Please contribute to our
BRM.
If we not agree how to work, our instruction says:
Monitor the actions of the Pilot closely. If the Pilot deviates from the
passage plan without informing the Navigator, s/he must ask the Pilot
What is your intention?
The Pilot must be relieved of the conn if the officer with the charge
determines that doing so is necessary or desirable to ensure or enhance
the safe operation of the vessel.
If a pilot is relieved of the conn by any officer other than the Master, then
the Master shall be notified immediately.

Question
The voyage plan onboard Carnival ships will consist of a route also from the
pilot station to the berth. What is the use of this?

a)

This route is just a reference and to fulfil the regulations of ISGOTT, i.e. to show what track will keep clear from the assigned no-go-areas. The
Pilot is always in charge and will use her/his own Portable Pilot Unit as the main tool for navigation.

b)

This route is in detail planned with wheel over lines, radius of turns, safety distances, and required UKC in order enable the whole bridge team to
monitor the passage. This route may be adjusted after agreement between Operations Director and the Pilot.

c)

This route is generated by the Carnival Nautical Centre and must never be changed. If the Pilot cannot follow, the master will relieve the Pilot
from her/his duties.

Question
The bridge onboard Carnival ships will in red manning consist of following
functions:

a)

Operations Director, Navigator, Co-Navigator, Administrator, Helmsman and Lookout. If the captain has the Conn, s/he cannot hold the function
as Operations Director.

b)

Captain, Staff Captain, Safety Officer, 1st Officer, 2nd Officer, Duty AB. The captain is conning the ship and is always in charge.

c)

Red manning is only in emergency and the bridge will be manned by the captain and duty officer. If Pilot onboard, s/he will has the Conn.

Question
On the bridge onboard Carnival ships the BRM concept of Closed Loop is
used. What is the correct example below?

a)

Pilot: Starboard ten

Helmsman: Starboard ten
Pilot: Roger

b)

Pilot: Starboard ten

Helmsman: Port ten
Pilot: Negative, starboard ten
Helmsman: Starboard ten
Pilot: Yes

c)

Pilot: Starboard ten

Captain: Starboard ten
Helmsman: Starboard ten

Welcome!

Welcome onboard Pilot!

We have the same goal
a safe passage in benefit
of our passengers. We like
to be a part of your work
and we like you to be a
part of our.

As pilot holding our CBT

certificate, you may inform our
operations director accordingly.
This will make the Pilot Exchange
Briefing smooth and efficient.
