Why is it important for human services workers to have a theoretical framework for
helping and creating change in clients? Cant we just rely on common sense, our
experience and education in our diagnosing and treatment of clients? You might want
to start your response by discussing what a theoretical framework is according to our
text/readings.

Conduct an Internet search for a professional article on an existential or humanistic
approach to working with someone who is terminally ill. Study the article and be
prepared to discuss your findings with your Learning Team. Each team member

What is the difference between positive and negative reinforcement? In your opinion
is either more effective? Why or why not? Start your response off with a definition of
positive and negative reinforcement. You may also want to discuss how negative
reinforcement and punishment are different.
Some counseling approaches recommend that the counselor should take more of a
passive role, and other approaches suggest that the counselor be very active. Do you
think that a counselor should be an active participant in the treatment of his or her

assumed by cognitive theorists relative or absolute? Do you agree with their
definition of reality. Why or why not?

they have discussed and agreed upon, but all family systems have rules under which
they operate. Explain the positive and negative functions that rules can play in the
family system.
What dysfunctions can you identify in your work place family? How are they
affecting you? How are they affecting others in your work family?
Search the Internet and professional journals of counseling, social work, employee
assistance, or other human services fields for two or three articles on systems theory
and its application to human services workers. Be prepared to discuss your articles

discussion.

theory, or issue(s) related to the helping professions for Week 5. Include a brief
transcript of the role-play.
