History

During 20th and 21st centuries interest in new and

renewable energy sources especially wind energy risen
for the electricity generation.

After the 1973 oil crisis, the RE sources started to

appear hence the wind energy gained significant
interest.

Present systems design and implementation was first

started in University of Northern Iowa (UNI) USA
where a 100 ft long wind tower to house the new wind
turbine is available at UNI campus.

Basic requirements

This project required purchasing of a 10 kW

Bergey Excel-S wind turbine.

A Power Sink II utility inter-tie module (208

V/240V AC, 60 Hz)

Eight BP SX175B 175W Solar photovoltaic (PV)

panels.

Related power and instrumentation/data

acquisition hardware through major funding
from the Iowa Alliance for Wind Innovation .

Advantages of SOLAR WIND HYBRID

POWER over other conventional methods

Solar and wind energy are non- depletable, sitedependent, non- polluting, and potential sources of
alternative energy.

Utilization of solar and wind power has become

increasingly significant, attractive and costeffective

Hybrid PV/wind energy systems are also designed

not only for meeting electricity requirements but
also for fresh water requirements through
desalination equipment installed to supply power
and heating requirements of a residential complex.

WIND ENERGY MANAGEMENT

The turbines blades are made of fiber glass blades which intentionally deform as the turbine reaches its rated output.
This deformation effect changes the shape of the blade, thus by limiting the rotation speed of the alternator and preventing damage in high winds.
Another feature of the wind turbine is a sophisticated internal regulator that periodically checks the line voltage and corrects for low voltage conditions.

The turbines blades are made of three fiber glass blades that will intentionally deform as the turbine reaches its rated output.
This deformation effect changes the shape of the blade, causing it to go into a stall mode,
This limiting the rotation speed of the alternator and preventing damage in high winds.

Modeling of (HRES) components

Photo Voltaic Modeling

Various feasibility and performance
studies report that PV system
strongly depends on solar radiation
available at the site.
PVs array area, number of wind
machines, and battery storage
capacity play an important role in
operation of PV system while
satisfying load.

Wind Modeling
o Optimum size of hybrid PV/wind energy system

can be calculated on an hourly basis or by daily

average power per month.

For a good wind modeling

capacity of wind generators should be fixed

yearly .Loss of Load Probability (LOLP) with

different capacity of PV array and battery bank
were calculated.
Various optimization techniques such as linear

programming ,dynamic programming etc; were

used to design a turbine in a cost effective way.

Establishment of the unit

It consists of a 10 kW Bergey Excel-S wind turbine.

Power Sink II utility intertie module (208 V/240V AC,
60 Hz)
Eight BP SX175B 175W solar Photo Voltaic (PV)
panels.
The battery banks will contain 12 deep- cycle leadacid batteries

Wind turbine system

The

wind turbine is installed at the

top of an existing steel tower which
has a height of approximately 100 ft.
It has permanent magnet generator
and an internal governor.
It generates 10 kW when turning at
its rated speed of 13 m/s.

Solar panels foundation

Wind turbine foundation

construction with e-bars

100 foot-long tower is

installed, and 10 kW Bergey

WT blades are strengthened and checked

100 foot wind tower and 10 kW Bergey

WT are finally installed and operating .

Instrumentation and Data Acquisition

Ananemometerorwind meteris a
device used for measuringwindspeed, and
is a commonweather stationinstrument.

DC and AC Transducers feed DAQs.

From DAQs it is fed to processing unit and

printed for research activities.

Advantages

Reliability of power output for the overall system

The solar array, generates power during the summer

season, when less wind is available to reach the expected
power output from the overall system.
,

The PV solar panels chosen for their ultra clear

tempered glass that is manufactured for long term
durability.

Combination of PV and wind in a hybrid energy system

reduces the battery bank and diesel requirements.

As the is Storage Hydrogen energy storage can be used

for long-term utilization.

Disadvantages

Presently no practical means available for

long-term storage of excess electrical
energy produced by the RE sources.

Due to power inverters power quality

problem becomes serious. This leads to
distortion in sinusoidal waveform output
which further leads to harmonic
contamination and poor voltage regulation.

Relying on highly transient energy source

exhibit strong short-term and seasonal
variations in energy outputs.

Applications:

The electricity generated by this power

station will be used as a renewable energy input
for a smart grid based green house educational
demonstration project to aid the teaching and
research on smart grid and energy efficiency
issues.

Practical Workshops in fields of Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM)
Awareness, education and training programmes
on wind and solar power systems to local
farmers.

FUTURE SCOPE

The test bed allows students to become educated

and
trained in using real-time electrical power systems to gain
valuable hands-on experience in setting up a real-time data
acquisition system.
Introduction to Electrical Power/Machinery.

conclusion

The wireless sensors collecting data on wind,

temperature, vibration, sound, voltage, current, power,
load changes at both wind and solar power systems will
communicate with NI data acquisition hardware and
the main computer.
This Lab View based instrumentation and data

power system by all permitted institutions requesting
real-time data.
A number of case studies on the PSCAD-EMTDC
simulation of wind-solar power system will be prepared
and embedded to instructional materials.
