Chapter 1 :Introduction to
Acne
Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory skin condition.
Nearly 90% of teenagers have acne, and half of them

continue to experience symptoms as adults.

Problem Identification :
- What is the characteristic of acne based on the glycemic
food index among students from semester 3 who studying
in medical faculty of Universitas Udayana,Denpasar,Bali.
Aim :
- To find out the characteristic of acne based on glycemic
food index among students from semester 3 who studying
in medical faculty of Universitas Udayana,Denpasar,Bali.

Benefits :

Glycemic Food Index

The Glycemic Index (GI) is a scale that ranks

carbohydrate-rich foods by how much they raise blood

glucose levels compared to a standard food.
The glycemic index is a ranking of carbohydrate on a scale

from 0 to 100 according to the extent to which they raise

blood sugar levels after eating.

Relationship between acne and

glycemic index
High glycemic food leads to
hyperinsulinemia

initiated by hormonal
cascade promotes
unregulated tissue growth

simultaneously elevating the

levels of free IGF-1

reducing the levels of

IGFBP-3

in the hyperproliferation

Chapter 3 : Concept
There are many factors that can contribute to the acne

problems among teenagers.

This study is important in identifying teenagers
particularly high school students or university students
who have unhealthy eating habits that commonly
contain high glycemic index.
Main purpose of this study is to know the total cases of
acne problem among university students in Universitas
Udayana,Bali who are at risk of getting this common
skin disorder based on the glycemic food index.

Chapter 4 : PLANNING OF
RESEARCH
Design :
This study is an observational descriptive study using

cross-sectional approach.
To determine the total number of acne cases in Semester 3
students who are studying in Medical Faculty of Universitas
Udayana, Denpasar,Bali.
Place :
This research was conducted at the Medical Faculty of
Universitas Udayana,Denpasar,Bali.
Time :
February 2014 until December 2014

Population :
The target population of this study is the university students

in Denpasar, Bali who are particularly studying in University

of Udayana from faculty of medicine semester 3.
students age must be particularly more than 17 to 23 years
old who will be categorized as teenagers.
METHOD OF SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
Sample collection technique used is total sampling
technique.
This method was chosen because this research aims to
describe the epidemiology where to find the total number of
acne cases among the students based on their glycemic food
index.

DATA COLLECTING METHOD AND ANALYSIS

The data were collected from students who are studying in

the faculty of medicine UNUD specifically those who are

in their 3rd semester.
A checklist was created according to glycemic food table to
include inside the questionnaire.

As a conclusion the glycemic food index is accepted as one

of the contributing factor to cause acne .

This is because the number of acne cases among the
students who have high glycemic food index is slight
higher compare to the number of acne cases in medium
and low glycemic food index.
Limitation :
Limitations of time owned by the researcher.
The study just a descriptive so the researcher cannot
conclude the correlation between glycemic food index
and acne.
Respondents were making it delay to filled up the
questionnaire with the limited time.
The glycemic food index of the respondents were difficult
to find because there were variety of food to be consider.

Suggestion :
As for the suggestion the time to carry out this research

must be longer so that the researcher can carry out this

study without any problem and the respondents would
respond well without any limited of time.
The study should have carry out as an analytical so that it
can be conclude by correlating between the glycemic food
index and acne.
For the glycemic food index may be blood glucose level of
each respondent should be checked in order to find out the
respondents glycemic index accurately.
