SISMOLOGIA
Es el estudio cientfico de los terremotos y la propagacin
de ondas elsticas a travs de la Tierra o de otros cuerpos
como planetas. El campo tambin incluye el estudio de los
efectos del terremoto, como los tsunamis, as como diversas
fuentes ssmicas volcnicas, tales como los procesos
tectnicos, ocenicos, atmosfricos y artificial (por ejemplo,
explosiones).
Un sismlogo es un cientfico que realiza investigaciones en
sismologa.

PRINCIPALES OBJETIVOS DE LA
INGENIERA SISMICA

a. Prever las consecuencias potenciales de terremotos

fuertes en las zonas urbanas y en la infraestructura civil.
b. Disear, construir y mantener las estructuras de altura
expuestas a las potenciales expectativas de un terremoto
reduciendo los riesgos y de acuerdo con los cdigos de
construccin.

Una estructura diseada adecuadamente

no necesariamente tiene que ser
extremadamente fuerte o cara. Tiene que
ser diseados para resistir los efectos
ssmicos durante el tiempo que se
mantiene a un nivel aceptable de daos,
minimizando al mximo el riesgo de
vidas.
