Case 3
After several profitable years, the Bob Cummings Organic Vitamin
Company was made available for sale. Bobs movie and TV appearances
precluded him from keeping track of a large company, and it became
apparent that, if present trends continued, the company would either have
to expand substantially or lose a large share of the market. Several firms
were interested in purchasing the company for the asking price, but one
firm was particularly aggressive. It sponsored several parties and
receptions in Bobs honor; a 35-foot yacht was made available for his use
during the summer; and several gifts for family members arrived during
the holidays. Bobs wife questioned the propriety of these activities. Was it
appropriate for Bob to accept the gifts? Should he sell to that firm?

Case 4
John Waller was hired to coach football. After two seasons, he was
so successful that he was named coach of the year by UPI, Sporting
News, and ESPN. He was also very vocal about the need to clean up
cheating in college athletics, especially among competitor schools
in his own conference. He heard rumors about inappropriate
alumni gifts to some of his own athletes, but after confronting those
involved, he received assurances that the rumors werent true. At
the beginning of the next season, however, he received conclusive
evidence that seven of the starters on his team, including an AllAmerican, had received financial benefits from a wealthy booster.
What should Waller do?

Q-1) what should the young manager do? Why did you make the
choices? Justify answer.

Suspend the athletes because they are expected to:

Behave with dignity, respect and good
sportsmanship
Conduct themselves with honesty and good
sportsmanship at all phases
Prohibit themselves from receiving any kinds of
in appropriate benefits.
Notifying the coach about these unethical
practices if they get to know it or suspect of it

Q-2) What Principles & Basic values did you used in decision making?

Terminal Value was used and its is the goal that we

work towards and view as most desirable. This value
was used because:
There were a large number of people to be
suspended that would affect the whole team
Athletes career was also considered, if they were
thrown out of the team, their career would be
ruined.

Q-3) what additional information would you need in order to be certain about your
choices?

Additional information like:

Proper investigation report
Popularity of the athletes
Mental and financial condition

Q-4) What circumstances might arise to make you change your mind about your
decision? Could there be a different answer to the case in a different circumstance?

The athletes should be kicked out because:

Strong evidence against seven of the members of the
team.
Violated the rules and regulations of the team.
If they are not punished, they might find some other
ways to engage into unethical practices which the
coach will not be aware of.
Also in future the new athletes can also engage
themselves into unethical practices.

Q-5) What do your answers tell you about your own emotional intelligence,
values, cognitive style, attitude toward change, and core self-evaluation?
Emotional

Intelligence: As being emotionally stable I have taken decision based

on logical consequences of my decision.
Values: Suspending the athletes was the right decisions because they should be
punished for breaching the code of conduct and hence terminal value was use here.
Cognitive style: I have found all the rational datas about the athletes inappropriate
gifts and financial benefits and analyzed it carefully and I had to set up the objective
carefully.
Attitude

towards change: Rational decision-making process has been used

and as precise information was given it was less ambiguous.
Core-self evaluation: My core capabilities are based on generalized selfefficacy, from that point of view I have found that I have the ability to
perform capably across a variety of circumstances. And I have the capability
to adapt changes in behavior, action, and decision

Case 5
Rogers company had been battered by competition from Asian firms.
Not only were Asian products selling for less money, but their quality
was subsequently higher. By investing in some high-technology
equipment and fostering better union-management relations, Roger was
relatively certain that the quality gap could be overcome. But his
overhead rate was more than 40% above that of the competitor firms. He
reasoned that the most efficient way to lower costs would be to close one
of this older plants, lay off the employees and increase production in the
newer plants. He knew just which plant would be the one to close. The
trouble was, the community was dependent on that plant as its major
employer and had recently invested a great deal of money for highway
repair and street light construction around the plant. Most of the
workforce were older people who lived in the area most of their lives. It
was improbable that they could obtain alternative employment in same
area.

Q-1) what should the young manager do? Why did you make the
choices? Justify answer.

Q-2) What Principles & Basic values did you used in decision making?

Ethical decision making was the major principle & Value.

According to the 2nd level or conformity level in the

classification of moral judgement into stages of development
moral reasoning is based on conforming to and upholding
the conventions & expectations of the society.

Companies which effectively manage ethical trade-offs are

able to develop a principled level of moral maturity.

Q-3) what additional information would you need in order to be certain about your
choices?

Q-4) What circumstances might arise to make you change your mind about your
decision? Could there be a different answer to the case in a different circumstance?

Yes my Answer would be Different under the below circumstances

If the employees of the old plant are deliberately reluctant to

work.
If the old plant has lack of logistics support which ultimately
made the product price to raise.
If there are legal concerns from local authority/govt to run
such a plant in that community.
Finally after doing the feasibility analysis, it was proved that
the old plant wont be able to turn into a profitable unit in
near future.

Q-5) What do your answers tell you about your own emotional intelligence,
values, cognitive style, attitude toward change, and core self-evaluation?

Thank you..!
