3.1 THE PSME

1.Introduction
The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers

(PSME) is an organization of Mechanical Engineers


in the Philippines founded in 1952 for the purpose
on uniting and enjoining the mechanical engineers
in the pursuit of further professional growth and to
uplift the profession.

The organization has worked out to a common goal,

with this is their mission that they stand with. The


organization is committed in fulfilling their missions
which is:
a. To maintain the integrity of the profession.
b. To promote excellence in the practice of the

profession.
c. To uplift the profession.
d. To contribute to the enhancement of science and

technology and economic growth of the country.


e. To promote fellowship and cooperation among

mechanical engineers, and instill nationalism among


members.

The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers

(PSME)
is
the
only
accedited
integrated
professional organization for Mehanical Engineers
in the Philippines. PSME was created to serve the
Filipino Mechanical Engineers of various grades
and
advance
the
Mechanical
Engineering
profession to provide sustainability to a changing
world.

The contributions of the Philippine Society of

Mechanical Engineers (PSME) to the continued


growth of the mechanical engineering profession
and technological advancement in the country
have made lasting marks as could be gleaned from
the recognition accorded by both the public and
private sectors.

PSME has indeed succeeded in living up to its role

of upgrading and improving the knowledge of


mechanical engineers in the country with its direct
assistance in providing solutions to the problems
related to the practice of the professions and by
continuously educating the members through the
conduct of regular plant tours, seminars, weekly
breakfast interactions and the annual technical
paper presentations and invention contest, among
others.

PSME has 82 chapters nationwide and 3 chapters

based at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with a total


membership of 35,000 fellow, life and associate
members. In addition, it has junior units in many
schools throughout the country.

4. PSME History
1952 The

Philippine Society of Mechanical


Engineers (PSME) was founded.

1955 - PSME was registered with the Securities

and Exchange Commission.


1967 PSME was merged with the Philippine

Association of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers


(PAMEE), a pioneer technical organization founded
in 1930.
1969 The Philippine Mechanical Engineering

Code First Edition was published.


1976 PSME to be independent of PAMEE
1984 - PSME assisted the PRC and the Board of

Mechanical Engineering in the formulation of


guidelines
on
the
Continuing
Professional
Education (CPE) which was to be fully

1985 Amended Constitution and By-Laws was

printed in pamphlet form. The Society, in its long


desire to have its own building, revived the
creation of the PSME Building Committee. The
revised M.E. Code in book form was formally
presented
to
the
Professional
Regulation
Commission and the Board of Mechanical
Engineering.
1986 The Society signed a memorandum of

agreement with the Product Standard Agency


(PSA), a governmental office created by Executive
Order No. 709. This formalized PSMEs authority to
formulate standards for materials, products and
processes.
1987 PSME signed agreements of cooperation

with the Societies of Mechanical Engineers of

1989 PSME transferred its general headquarters to

the PSME Building


1991 - Securities and Exchange Commission released

the amended PSME Constitution and By-Laws.


1992 Revision of the M.E. Code.
1994 Establishment of the Continuing Education

Center
1998 Signing of R.A. 8594 An Act Regulating the

Practice of Mechanical Engineering in the Philippines.


Signing of IRR Implementing Rules and Regulations of
R.A. 8495 last September 25, 1998 at Mandarin
Oriental Hotel
2003 Launching of the Philippine Mechanical Code
