INTRODUCTION
• A turbine is a rotary engine that
extracts energy from a fluid flow
and converts it into useful work.

• In a reaction turbine, forces

driving the rotor are achieved by
the reaction of an accelerating
water flow in the runner while the
pressure drops.

• Due to the great variety of

possible runner designs, reaction
turbines can be used over a much
larger range of heads and flow
rates
SPRINKLER
• Irrigation sprinklers are
sprinklers used on
farms, golf courses, and
yards, to provide water
to vegetation and plants
in the event of drought.
They may also be used
for recreation, as a
cooling system, or to
keep down the amount
of airborne dust.
TYPES OF SPRINKLER

•Industrial sprinklers : These sprinklers operate through electric

and hydraulic technology and are grouped together in zones that
can be collectively turned on and off by actuating a solenoid-
controlled valve.

•Residential sprinklers: Home lawn sprinklers vary widely in their

size, cost, and complexity. They include impact
sprinklers, oscillating sprinklers, drip sprinklers, and
underground sprinkler systems

•Underground sprinklers: Underground sprinklers function

through means of basic electronic and hydrolic technology. This
valve and all of the sprinklers that will be activated by this valve
are known as a zone. Upon activation, the solenoid, which sits on
top of the valve is magnetized lifting a small stainless steel
plunger in its center.
SPRINKLER AS A REACTION
TURBINE
In a reaction water comes out
at a high velocity from the rotor
in a tangential direction. The
essential feature of the rotor is
that water enters at high
pressure and this pressure
energy is transformed into
kinetic energy by a nozzle
which is a part of the rotor
itself.
This is the principle followed in
a sprinkler too.
CONSTRUCTION

Sprinkler consists of:

1. Diffuser
2. Pipe for water column
3. Shaft
4. Bearing
5. Rotor
6. Nozzle
7. Rim
CONSTRUCTION
• Diffuser: It is a device present at the water inlet to pump the
water up to the level where the rotor is present. This device
due to its structure pushes the water with a pressure upwards

•Pipe for Water column: The diffuser is connected to a GI pipe

column, through which the pressurized water flows upwards.

•Shaft : This column ends up into a stationary shaft. Shaft is

made out of nylon block keeping weight considerations in
mind.

• Specification of bearing used:

10mm bore
28 mm outer diameter
8 mm thickness.
CONSTRUCTION
•Rotor: It is made up of PVC pipes as the torque required is more and to
run a motor the rotor speed should also be more. The length of the arms
is long so that torque is more, which would ease the rotation of the
motor.

•Nozzle: Sprinkler works only when the water oozes out of the system at
high velocity. Thus two nozzles facing opposite to each other are fixed at
the end of the arms. This produces reaction forces and thus rotates the
sprinkler.

•Rim : A small rim has been attached to the rotor part of the sprinkler,
such that, it rotates along with the sprinkler. This rim is coupled to
themotor and the pulley system.
WORKING

POWER GENERATING SPRINKLER

The rotary motion of the sprinkler has been used to
generate power by coupling the sprinkler to a motor.
This motor generates electricity when made to rotate.
This electric current can be stored, amplified or used
directly.
SMART SPRINKLER
•The total head of the
sprinkler depends on the
kinetic energy, potential
energy and pressure head of
the system.

•When the mass on the belt

moves from bottom to top
the head required to turn
the sprinkler increases ,
reducing the coverage area,
similarly when it moves from
the top end to the bottom,
the head required reduces
the sprinkling the water to
its maximum capacity
coverage area.
SOLID EDGE DESIGN OF THE POWER
GENERATING SMART WATER SPRINKLER
CALCULATIONS
Output power generated at the nozzle :
Specification of motor :
Voltage : 12V
Input torque of the motor : 0.03Nm

Assuming 50% of the torque is used for generating power and
the res spinning the rim.
We know that,
Torque = Force * Radius (T= F*r)
Therefore, F= 0.015/0.12 radius of the rim= 12 cm
= 0.125 N
This force at the rim is equal to the force at the nozzle of the
rotor
Therefore,
Torque at the nozzle = 0.125 * 0.20
= 0.025 Nm
Since reaction forces occur a couple is formed

Thus angular velocity, ω due to couple, C is given by

C= ω * r
Therefore,
ω = (0.025 / 0.2)* 3600
= 450 rpm

We know that,
A 12v , 3W motor can produce 3000 rpm
Therefore, at 450 rpm,
The power generated is given by,
(450* 3)/ 3000
= 0.45W
Result, the output power generated is 0.45W.
APPLICATIONS
1. Energy produced can be stored in a capacitor, battery
for later usage.
2. Small amount of power generated can be used for
beatification.
3. The power generated can be amplified and used for
various other purpose.
4. The smart system helps sprinkler to cover more area
thus preventing continuous shifting of the sprinkler
ADVANTAGES AND
DISADVANTAGES
•It is cheap.
•An Alternate source of energy.
•Energy tapped can be used in for various purposes.
•Covers more area when kept at a place.

The disadvantage of the sprinkler is,

It requires a larger head of water at inlet to produce
considerable amount of energy.
CONCLUSION
1. Energy produced and stored in any form is very useful
and sprinklers which when acts as water turbine can be
used to generate power.
2. This power if tapped can be utilized in lawns for
beautification along with its regular usage thus making
it a very cheap source of energy.
3. The energy if stored can also be utilized for various
purposes.
4. The smart system incorporated makes it a easy to use
and makes it cover more area when kept at a particular
place.
