Theoretical Review
a. Listening Skill
In communication theory, listening is viewed as part of
transactional process in which all participants are simultaneously
sending and receiving messages. (Rost, 2002: 54).
1. Definition of listening
According to Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia and Oxford Advance
Learners Dictionary, listening is:
Mendengarkan (memperhatikan) baik-baik apa yang diucapkan
atau dibaca orang.
To pay attention to somebody/something that you can hear.
1. Types of Listening
Discriminative listening
Comprehensive listening
Critical (evaluative) listening
Therapeutic (emphatic) listening
Appreciative listening
3. Principles of Listening
The tape recorder is just as important as the
tape
Preparation is vital
Once will not be enough
Students should be encouraged to respond to
the content of a listening, not just to the
language
Different listening stages demand different
listening tasks
Good teachers exploit listening texts to the

b. Teaching media
There are four types of teaching media
which are printed (such as books,
worksheets and modules), visual (such as
photos and silent movies), audio (such as
radio and telephone) and audio-visual
(such as silent movies, videos and
televisions).

Conceptual Framework
In this research, the researcher
using English Video media to be
implemented relating the materials
that brings into classroom. This
media can help students to improve
their listening skill, because besides
hear the audio, the students also can
see the pictures of the video.
Hypothesis
There is a significant difference
between the experimental group
which is taught by using English
clip video and the control group
which is not taught by using
English clip video. It can be
concluded that; English Clip Video
is an effective media in teaching
listening at SMK Muhammadiyah 2
Sleman.
