What is standardized work?

Gabriela Garca

Standard Work

Definition

Standardized work is A TOOL FOR MAINTAINING PRODUCTIVITY,

QUALITY, AND SAFETY, at high levels.
Standardized work is defined as work in which the sequence of job elements
has been efficiently organized, and is repeatedly followed by a team member.
Standardized work is a process whose goal is kaizen. If standardized work
doesnt change, we are regressing.

Standard Work

Definition

Standardized work consists of three elements:

1. Takt time, which is the rate at which products must be made in a process to meet
customer demand.
2. The precise work sequence in which an operator performs tasks within takt time.
3. The standard inventory, including units in machines, required to keep the process
operating smoothly.

Standard Work

Definition

Standard work supports the lean system of continuously improving capacities

and efficiencies by defining 5 critical elements for every person doing the
work:
1. The customer demand.
2. The most efficient work routine (steps).
3. The cycle times required to complete work elements.
4. All process quality checks required to minimize defects/errors.
5. The exact amount of work in process required.

Standards protect consumers

Standards make sure that products work together safely and as
intended. They are also needed by test labs to check that products are
safe to use; governments rely on them to protect citizens from unsafe
products

Companies are able to sell globally

Companies need International Standards so that they can sell

their products anywhere they want.
International Standards contain all the information they need about
differences between individual countries they would like to export to.

Standard Work

10

Standards help developing

countries

Standards enable the countries to attract companies who want

to set up production sites and share their technology, which in
turn helps local economies to grow.

Standard Work

11

Standards are good for the

environment

Standards regulate and limit the use of chemical products and

include recycling considerations. They are a good way to broadly
share and promote more environmentally-friendly production
processes.

Standard Work

12

World without standards

Products might not work as expected

They may be of inferior quality
They may be incompatible with other equipment.
In extreme cases, non-standardized products may be dangerous
Customers would be restricted to one manufacturer or supplier
Manufacturers would be obliged to invent their own individual solutions to even the
simplest needs, with limited opportunity to compete with others

The Road to Standardization

Seven Steps

There are seven steps to

implementing
standardization, an approach
that Booz & Company and
RWD Technologies call the
Standard Work Wheel.
This is a comprehensive
framework that can be used
across all industries and for
all levels of an organization.
