Plurality of local elders 4 total ( strong leaders)

Elder Responsibility and Oversight

Our elders work alongside the senior pastor to
implement the churchs vision
Our elders govern the church based on sensitivity to
the Holy Spirit in regard to our vision, budgets, and
policies
Our elders determine the requirements/standards for
leadership, the membership process, and our
Statement of Faith

1 Peter 5:4 The elders who are among you I exhort, I

who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of
Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be
revealed: Shepherd the flock of God which is among
you, serving as overseers, not by constraint but
willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as
being lords over those entrusted to you, but being
examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd
appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does
not fade away.

Shepherd the flock

Serve as overseers
Set an example (1 Corinthians 11:1; Philippians 4:9)
Our elders are also responsible for holding members
accountable to biblical standards of character and conduct
Some specific responsibilities include addressing:
Open and blatant sin (1 Corinthians 5:1-2)
Issues involving doctrinal error (2 Peter 2:1-3)
Divisive and contentious behavior (Titus 3:9-11)

Matthew 18:15-17 Moreover if your brother sins

against you, go and tell him his fault between you
and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained
your brother. But if he will not hear you, take with
you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or
three witnesses every word may be established.
And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church.
But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him
be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

Begins with personal confrontation (alone)

Expands to committee confrontation (two or more)
Broadens to group confrontation (larger group)
And ends in removal of member privileges
The purpose is redemption
The attitude is humility
The result is accountability
This is an uncommon, but biblical process (keeps us
safe and healthy)

The Changing Role of Elders

An elders role changes as the church grows. Heres
an example of how that looks
1 Timothy 5:17 The elders who direct the affairs of
the church well are worthy of double honor,
especially those whose work is preaching and
teaching.
The role of elders is not only preaching and teaching,
but directing the affairs of the church

(do -- personal) When a church is small, directing the affairs of the church
has to do with personal ministry to individuals such as ministry to a sick child,
dealing with an impending divorce, assisting a man who has lost his job

(oversee -- empower others) When a church begins to grow, directing her

affairs will move toward hiring staff and building a pastoral team to
accomplish the vision and mission of the church

(lead -- manage) As the church grows even larger, the elders role takes on
yet another change. Their priorities become making policies, determining the
scope of building projects because thats the affairs of the church at that
time
The affairs of the church change by necessity as the church grows. Thus,
the role of the elders changes as well

Deacon Service (deacons are servants, not governors)

Acts 6:3-4 records the first deacons being appointed men
full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom
They were chosen to serve so that pastors and elders could
pray and minister the word
Appointment and Recognition
