Intervention Overview

First National Workshop on Pig and


Pork Industry in Nepal
Samarth held the first
national workshop on pig and
port marketing in Nepal on
10th and -11th December,
2013

The event was attended by


a diverse range of
stakeholder groups
including pig farmers,
processors and government
officers.

In partnership with the


government bodies: Nepal
Agricultural Research
Council ( NARC) and
Departmentof Livestock
Services (DLS);

Provided a platform for public


private dialogue to identify
critical policy issues required
to unlock growth in the
sector

conducive environment for
inclusive growth in the overall pig
and pork market system

Activities:
Assist PEANs formation and
organizational development.
Information management,
advocacy, social inclusion and
gender sensitization
Technical assistance for PEAN
outreach to regional and district
level

Systemic Changes:
Well-functioning institution
serving the pig and pork sector
Improved dialogue between
private and public pig related
stakeholder
Lobby policies/issues to improve
pig and pork market system

The workshop was


supported by
Federation of
Nepalese Chamber
of Commerce
(FNCCI),
Department of
District Livestock
( DLS) and Nepal
Agricultural
Research Center
(NARC).

the
training
program

PEAN is
now

rolling
out its
activities

district
chapters
have
been
opened

PEAN
organize
d the
second
national
workshop
and pork
festival

PEAN plans to work


with the
government on
issues like quality
control, supply
chain
management,
explore export
potential in the
future.

The main
achievement of
the workshop was
the creation of 18
point declaration
which highlighted
the creation of Pig
Development
board which
specifically looks
at the pig sector.
