CHAPTER 5
In this chapter, the designers will discuss the tradeoff
that governed in accordance with the different design
constraint that were discussed on Chapter 3 of this
paper. The winning design will be a suitable solution
among the 4 different tradeoffs that was considered for
the design. Considering all the constraints, the
governing tradeoff is the Pre-timed Traffic Light System.
It is the tradeoff that governed with the 3 measureable
constraints and the calculations for the validation of the
constraints are showed on Chapter 4 of this paper.

For the Economic Constraint, the Pre-timed Traffic Light


System and the Rerouting Scheme 1 got the higher rank
considering the Final Estimate for all the tradeoffs. It
can also be seen on the initial cost estimate because
the Pre-timed Traffic Light system costs lower or
cheaper being compared to the Actuated Traffic Light
System that was introduced by the designers on
Chapter 2 of this paper. For Rerouting Scheme 1 it can
be seen that the new route is shorter than the other
route therefore making it less costly. And considering
all the effect of the constraints its the Pretimed Traffic
Light System that got the highest over all ranking.

For the Constructability Constraint, also the Pre-timed


Traffic Light System got the highest over all ranking
than the other 3 tradeoff. The reason for that is that the
Actuated Traffic Light System requires a lot more manhours to install because it has detectors that needs to
be installed before the actual traffic light that is on the
intersection itself and also that the rerouting schemes
takes a lot of time just to disseminate the information
when the rerouting will be effective..

For the Sustainability Constraint it is again the Pretimed


Traffic Light System and Rerouting Scheme 1 that got
the higher overall rank than the their counterpart. When
considering all of the constraints and its effect on the
overall ranking it can be shown that the Pretimed Traffic
Light System won over Rerouting Scheme 1 mainly
because Pretimed Traffic Light System gives a lesser
value for the Volume-Capacity Ratio that the designers
have computed.

As clearly seen from the different constraints that affect


the design of the intersection, the Pre-timed Traffic Light
System has governed on all of the constraints. The
details for the time plan and all the necessary
attachments for the implementation of the Pre-timed
Traffic Light System will be shown below.
