International School that Support

Technology
Berlin Brandenburg
International School
(BBIS) is an IB World School. The
school was established 1990 in
Potsdam, Germany, but is now
located in Kleinmachnow,
between Berlin and Potsdam
(17km to Berlin/20km to
Potsdam).
English is the language of instruction
at BBIS, meaning that all subjects,
including math, drama, humanities,
technology, music, etc. are taught in
English. The school is divided into
preschool, elementary, middle and
upper schools. As of the beginning of
the 2008 school year, there are
approximately 650 students.

FACILITIES
The extensive facilities at BBIS
include four large red-brick
buildings (Houses), a pavilion, a
sports hall, and a sports field.
They are continuously upgraded
to keep pace with the demands
of the educational and
extracurricular programme.
The learning environment is
modern, comfortable, suitably
equipped, and purposefully
designed for specific learning
needs.
The BBIS campus provides large
classrooms for the Elementary,
Middle, and High School, including
contemporary science labs, two fully
networked computer labs, a mobile
wireless computer lab, art studios,
music classrooms and practice
rooms, two multipurpose rooms,
faculty and student lounges, plus a
cafeteria and a library with a small
additional computer lab.
Between Houses 1 and 2 the
school has built a modern
playground with a multi-level
play area, rubber sports
surface, and a climbing
structure.
Right opposite the school buildings is
the full-size artificial-turf sports field
with a six-lane running track,
opened in autumn 2007. Besides
complete football apparatus, the
field also boasts a sand court for
beach volleyball, basketball courts,
and facilities for the high and long
jump, discus throwing, and shot put.
Floodlights and bleachers with
seating for 820 spectators prepare
the school to host larger
The impressive facility includes three
separate gymnasiums, audience
seating, and a fitness room. The gyms,
which can be combined into one large
space, are fully equipped for basketball,
volleyball, handball, indoor soccer, and
tennis. Additionally, the hall contains a
climbing wall, rings, climbing ropes, wall
bars, and other professional-quality
sports equipment. The Sports Hall is
also used as an auditorium, theatre, and
concert hall.

BBIS MISSION &
PHILOSOPHY
MISSION
BBIS is an inclusive,
coeducational English
language day and boarding
school serving the
internationally-minded
community of Germany's
capital region and beyond.
The school offers its students a
challenging, comprehensive
education within a diverse,
respectful, caring, and
encouraging community of
learners, enabling them to
develop the skills necessary to
achieve their full potential.
PHILOSOPHY
The curriculum provides both academic
stimulation and a wide variety of
educational experiences beyond the
classroom. We are committed to
teaching the International Baccalaureate
programme from Early Childhood to
grade 12. Our educational practices flow
from this integrated, inquiry-based
programme.
Diversity is essential to our mission.
According to the principles stated in
the United Nations Declaration of
Human Rights, people of all races,
nations, and religions should
respect and honour each other. We
teach our students to understand
and respect the views, values, and
traditions of other individuals and
cultures, as well as their own.
Care and compassion should be
characteristic of all relationships
within the school community.
Learning takes place best in an
environment that promotes care
and concern for the welfare of
others.
All members of the school
community are encouraged to
pursue excellence and are
recognized for their achievements.
All people within the school
community - staff, parents,
administration, and supervisory
board - continue to learn
alongside the students we teach.
Students develop both intellectual
and social skills in order to
become critical and creative
thinkers, achieve their personal
best, and mature into responsible
adults.
Elementary School
The Elementary School at BBIS caters to
students from Early Childhood (ages 3 to 5)
to grade 5 (ages 10 to 11), and offers the IB
Primary Years Programme (PYP). BBIS
provides their students with a cooperative,
caring environment in which to learn, and
supports each student so that each can fulfil
his or her potential through a challenging,
comprehensive, and engaging curriculum.
In addition to the core academic
areas, students at different
levels have classes in German,
Information Technology,
Physical Education, Art, and
Music, all taught by specialist
teachers. Student Support
Service teachers help students
with special learning needs.
Students in the Elementary
School may choose from about
30 exciting and challenging
extracurricular activities each
term. These include soccer,
sailing, cross country, biking,
karate, calligraphy,
Instrumental Ensemble, Web
design, and many other
activities and clubs.
The curriculum is supplemented
by a number of field trips in
and outside Berlin, and each
class in grades 1 to 5 takes an
overnight trip in the spring.
Our aim is to nurture
globally minded citizens who
are:
 Communicators
 Thinkers
 Inquirers
 Risk-takers
 Knowledgeable
 Principled
 Caring
 Open-minded
 Balanced
 Reflective
STUDENT SUPPORT
SERVICES
With a broad range of language, learning,
and counselling services, the Student
Support Services Department fosters an
environment in which all BBIS students
are able to learn at their full potential. In
response to diverse student abilities,
interests, attitudes, and goals, Student
Support Services provides an inclusive
educational environment for each and
every student.

Location
The BBIS campus is located in
the village of Kleinmachnow,
just to the southwest of Berlin,
on nearly 400,000 square
metres (100 acres) of forested
land, on the shore of the
Machnower See and the
Teltowkanal.
The site, called the Seeberg, is
very quiet, away from traffic and
congestion, crisscrossed with
peaceful foot and bicycle paths.
Nearby is the Hakeburg, a castle
rebuilt at the turn of the 20th
century on the ruins of a
medieval fortress.
The school is only a few minutes
drive from the residential
areas of southwest Berlin and
the Brandenburg suburbs, and
within short driving distance of
Potsdam. It can be reached by
car and public transport from
Berlin and Potsdam.

In January 2010 the International
Award programme was launched at
BBIS. The Award is an exciting self-
development programme available
to all 14 to 25 year olds. It began in
the United Kingdom in 1956 and has
now spread to 126 countries. Over 6
million young people worldwide have
taken up the Award challenge.
The Award is about individual
challenge, not about reaching
specific standards set by
someone else. Students design
their own Award Programme,
set their own goals, and record
their own progress.

performance that was a feast of song,
movement and home-spun philosophy.
The cast and crew did a great job and
