What Is A Threatened
Miscarriage?

A threatened miscarriage occurs when


vaginal bleeding within the first 20 weeks
of pregnancy. It suggests that a miscarriage
may happen. Miscarriages that occur
during the first 3 months of pregnancy are
usually due to a problem in the way the
baby develops. Many women who have
vaginal bleeding or spotting during early
pregnancy go on to have healthy babies.

What causes bleeding or


spotting during pregnancy?

Uterine polyps, fibroids, or cysts


Sexual intercourse
Infection
Your cervix (the opening at the bottom of your
uterus) opened too soon
Where or how the placenta is attached to your
uterus (womb)
A problem with your fetus (unborn baby)
Ectopic pregnancy (the fetus is growing outside
of the uterus)

What are the signs and


symptoms of a threatened
miscarriage?

Vaginal spotting or bleeding


Heavy bleeding (soaking more than one pad
per hour)
Passing something that looks like tissue (Try to
take this with you to hospital for examination)
Severe cramping, like a menstrual period
Bleeding or abdominal pain in a woman who
has had a previousectopic pregnancy
Severe vomiting

How is a threatened
miscarriage diagnosed?
Blood

tests:Your blood is tested to find


the cause of your bleeding.
Pelvic exam:This is done to check the
size of your uterus and to see if your
cervix has dilated (opened).
Pelvic ultrasound:This is done to see
your baby or his heartbeat.

How is a threatened
miscarriage treated?
There is no sure way to prevent a
miscarriage. The following may help you
manage your symptoms:
Rest:patient may need to rest, limit
certain activities, or not have sex until
the symptoms are better.
Drugs therapist : Dufaston 10 mg BD
tablet usually given to the patient for
control bleeding

Nursing Care Plan


Pervagina bleeding related with the
disease process .
No pervagina bleeding after 48 hours .

Asses the patient's condition.

Example : Take vital signs every 6 hours to detect


bleeding.

Treat the patient in bed to reduce patient


motion.
Record chart pad shifts .
Provide medication according to the
instructions of Doctor

Example : use Dufaston tab 10 mg BD

2. Feeling worried and anxious due to condition


of pregnancy.
The patient was calm and feel comfortable in the
ward.
Asses the patient's condition

Provide emotional support

Example : take note patients complaints

Provide explanations

Example : through facial expression and hear patients


complaint.

Example: provide explanation to the patients about the


benefit of treatment that can save the pregnancy.

Relaxing patients & make them feel comfortable

Example : advise patients to reduce movement and limit


the number of visitors .
