Nursing
Listed as #1 in the Top Twenty Big Growth Occupation
Estimated to rise by 26% by 2020
Why??
Always needed
Low amount of education
Community

Reardon et at., 2012.

WHY?
Occupation that employs the most people will add more
than million jobs (Reardon et al., 2012)
People will always be sick
People always age
Medical necessity
RN workforce will begin to grow during the latter part of
the current decade and then grow rapidly between 2020
and 2030 (Auerbach, Buerhaus, & Staiger, 2011).

Education
Most nurses have an Associate or Bachelors degree
According to the Unemployment Rate and Earnings Related to Educational Attainment,
Associates Degrees are close to the top of the list of the unemployment rate

Opposite of the fact that Reardon explains that more education is connected to more
income

Until the pipeline for advanced education in nursing is flowing freely, the
nation's nurse workforce will have difficulty achieving its potential (Cleary et
al., 2009)
The predominance of the Holland S and E codes shows that the occupations
growing at the most rapid rate in the future will employ people with people
skills. (Reardon et al., 2012).

Druckers View
Hospitals are organizations because they focus on one task.
Organizations function best when they have a clear purpose and
specialists working in the organization know exactly how to align
themselves with this larger purpose.
Not a community, society, class, clan, or tribe?
The reliability of operating theatre teamwork and its role in ensuring errorfree surgery, thereby reducing the risks of harm to patients, has been studied
intensively in recent years. Problems of miscommunication and poor teamwork
associated with hierarchy, fatigue and stress from dysfunctional relationships
between professional groups have been reported (morgan et al., 2015).

So What?

Nursing is going to continue to grow

Must be in it for the right reasons
Education and income are not always connected
People skills and teamwork increase positive outcomes
