Most automatic transmission and transaxles have

one or more planetary gearsets can provide any of

five conditions:
1.Speed increase with torque decrease(overdrive)
2.Speed decrease with torque increase(underdrive
or reduction)
3.Direct drive(input and output shafts turn at same
speed)
4.Reverse direction of rotation(reverse)
5.Neutral(input and output shaft disconnected)

A simple planetary gearset is made of three

members:
1.Internal or ring gear
2.Planet-pinion carrier with two or more planet
pinions
3.Sun gear

Deceleration
Power input: ring gear
Power output: planetary
carrier
Stationary: sun gear
When the sun gear is held
stationary, only the
pinion gear rotates and revolves.
Therefore, the
output shaft decelerates in
proportion to the input
shaft only by the rotation of the
pinion gear.

Direct Coupling
Power input: sun gear, ring gear
Power output: planetary carrier
Ring gear rotates with the locked
planetary carrier,
the input and output shafts rotate at the
same rate.

Reverse Rotation
Power input: sun gear
Power output: ring gear
Stationary: Planetary carrier
When the planetary carrier is fixed in
position and
the sun gear turns, the ring gear turn on
its axis
and the rotational direction is reversed.

Planetary Gearset Ratios

One of the planetary gearsets from our
transmission has a ring gear with 72 teeth and a
sun gear with 30 teeth. We can get lots of different
gear ratios out of this gearset.
