HOKLAS

The purpose of QM: to make a product that quality is designed,

produced, and maintained at the least possible cost, while still
providing full customer satisfaction.
One way to conceptualise the field of QM is known as the three
spheres of quality programs.
Quality
Management
Quality
Assurance
Three Spheres of Quality Programs
Quality
Control

Quality control: part of quality management focused on

fulfilling quality requirements.
It uses statistical techniques to control the quality. It is reactive.
Activities include the following:

Monitoring process capability and stability.

Measuring process performance.

Reducing process variability.

Performing acceptance sampling.

Developing and maintaining control charts.

Quality assurance: part of quality management focused on

providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled.

It refers to activities associated with guaranteeing the quality. It

is pro-active by eliminating the causes of quality problems
before they occur.
Quality assurance activities include:

Failure mode and effects analysis.

Experimental design.

Process improvement.

Design team formation and management.

Off-line experimentation.

Reliability/durability product testing

Quality management: the coordinated activities to

direct and control an organization with regard to quality.
It is the collections of the management processes that
overarch and tie together the control and assurance
activities.
QM activities include tasks such as
Planning for quality improvement.
Creating quality culture in the organization.
Providing leadership and support.
Providing training and retraining.
Designing an organizational system that reinforces quality ideas.
Facilitating organizational communication.

Introduction to Quality
Quality Control (QC) is a system of routine technical
Control

activities, to measure and control the quality of the

inventory as it is being developed.

The QC system is designed to:

(i) Provide routine and consistent checks to ensure data
integrity, correctness, and completeness;
(ii) Identify and address errors and omissions;
(iii) Document and archive inventory material and record
all QC activities.

15

Quality control (QC) includes the activities from the

suppliers, through production, and to the customers.

1.

Incoming materials are examined to make sure they meet

the appropriate specifications.

2.

The quality of partially completed products are analyzed

to determine if production processes are functioning
properly.

3.

Finished goods and services are studied to determine if

they meet customer expectations.
