PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY OF OEDEMA
Movement of water and low molecular weight
solutes between intravascular n interstitial
spaces is controlled primarily by opposing
effects of:

 HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE:It forces the blood

fluid pass into the tissues through the
capillary wall.
OSMOTIC pressure: Formed by plasma
proteins (especially albumin).It tries to keep
the fluid in the capillary.

Arteriolar end: Hydrostatic pressure > Oncotic

pressure
Fluid passes into interstitium
Venule end: Oncotic pressure > Hydrostatic
pressure
Fluid returns capillary bed

FLUID WILL ACCUMULATE

IN INTERSTITIAL SPACES IF
THERE IS:

1.CARDIAC DYSFUNCTIONS:
AUSCULTATION: Tachycardia
Tachypnea
Abnormal rhythm
Murmers
ECG : elongation of t-wave(left
ventricle enlargement)
X ray : enlargement of left ventricle.

2.RENAL DYSFUNCTIONS

Vomiting
Frequent micturation
Anaemia
KFT: elevated levels of creatinine and
BUN

3.LIVER DYSFUNCTIONS
ANAEMIA
JAUNDICE
Vomition
Nervous signs
LFT:
elevated ammonia level
Ammonia : glucose >40:1
Ammonia : urea >30:1

4.PARASITIC INFECTIONS

Weakness
Anaemia
DIARRHOEA

5.HAEMORRHAGIC SEPTICEMIA

Death may occur within 24 hrs.(resp

6.JHONES DISEASE

Chronic condition
Shooting diarrhoea
Normal temperature
Normal appetite but weight loss.

Isolation of bacteria : herrold egg

yolk agar
Jhonin test

7. LUMPY JAW
Initially similar swelling observed.
But in later stages of jaw bone is deformed.
Swelling when palpated is hard.

X-RAY and BACTERIAL ISOLATION act as

imp diagnostic tools.

8.BLOCKED SALIVARY GLAND AND

LYMPH NODE ABSCESS
Blockage of salivary ducts or lymph
drainage from abscessed lymph
nodes is likely to be sporadic and
diagnosed by palpation and close
examination for asymmetry.
