Motivation
Gas

turbine engines are widely used for power Generation

and aircraft engines etc. turbine blade is one of the most

important component of the engine. It is subjected to the
very severe working conditions at high temperature with
centrifugal stress.
Gas

turbine blades and rotor components account for 28

percent of primary causes of gas turbine failures, with

turbine nozzles and stationary part account for only 18
percent

TMF

has become more critical to the life of gas

turbine blades due to the use of improved blade
cooling technologies that enables higher gas
temperature there by improving turbine efficiency.

In

recent cooling technologies steam cooling and

advanced air cooling is used which introduced
humidity into the turbine blade and play its role in
decreasing the life of blade.

Cooling Architecture of HP turbine

Blade

Thermo Mechanical
Fatigue
In

gas turbines, the turbine blades are subjected to severe

thermal and mechanical loading during running condition. At
these loading conditions, the blades are subjected to failure
due to cyclic loading. Generally failure due to the
contribution of both thermal and mechanical loading is
termed as Thermo Mechanical Fatigue(TMF)

TMF

conditions produce significant damage contribution

from creep, oxidation and low cycle fatigue .this is mainly
due to the effect of thermal stresses from thermal gradients
and transients in the blade, as well as different coefficient of
expansion between the blade material and coatings.

Three possible damage mechanism exists in turbine blade

Fatigue
Creep
Environmental or Oxidation
Depending upon the temperature, strain and phasing all three
damage mechanism can be operating
If temperature is too low for significant creep and oxidation
then fatigue damage mechanism will control the life .
In out of phase TMF (high temperature coincide with the
compressive stress) oxidation damage mechanism will control
the life
In in phase TMF fatigue damage model will be used

During

straight and level flight aero engine are at

constant temperatures and mechanical loading. At
this condition, steady state creep and the influence of
oxidation are primary damage mechanism.

At

take off and landing ,the transient condition of

temperature and load arises which lead to fatigue
damage.

Objective
In

this project effect of oxidation damage

along with fatigue and creep will be taken
while calculating the life of the turbine
blade using cumulative damage approach.
Analysis of blade profile with cooling
holes will be done to get more real results.

Material used for the turbine blade

Methodology
Following steps will be followed
Selection and Modeling of the blade profile .
Mechanical Stress and thermal Analysis of the
blade profile on Abaqus
Make a program for the oxidation and creep life
estimation in Matlab.
Using FE SAFE software to get the value of
