The Dassler Family

Christoph von Wilhelm Dassler a worker in a shoe
factory, ran a small laundry in theBavariantown
ofHerzogenaurach, 20km (12.4mi) from the city
ofNuremberg with his wife Pauline.
Their economical condition was too poor. They
lived in a small house. They had two sons Rudolf
Dassler and Adolf Dassler. Both of them were Nazis
and were a part of World War I.
Their financial status was too low.

From where did it

start..??

Two of the world's most renowned shoe

companies took birth from a bout of bad
blood between siblings. In the 1920s,
German brothers Adolf and Rudolf
Dassler launched a shoe company
together in their mother's laundry room.
Their business boomed after Dassler
shoes adorned the feet of gold-medalwinning Olympians in the 1930s. But as
their sales spiked, so did the tension
between the two brothers.

The Turning Point

The 1936 Summer Olympics was a turning point for
them.
By the1936 Summer Olympics,Adi Dasslerdrove from
Bavaria on one of the world's first motorways to the
Olympic village with a suitcase full of spikes and
persuaded U.S.sprinterJesse Owensto use them, the
firstsponsorshipfor an African American.
Following Owens's haul of four gold medals, his success
cemented the good reputation of Dassler shoes among
the world's most famous sportsmen. Letters from
around the world landed on the brothers' desks, and
the trainers of other national teams were all interested
in their shoes.
Business boomed and the Dasslers were selling
2,00,000 pairs of shoes each year before World War II.
Their economical condition grew better due to the hard
work, sacrifice and determination of the Dassler
brothers.

Splitting Up
The brothers split up in 1947. Rudolf moved to the other
side of theAurach River .
While no one is sure what caused the riff, it's said to be
a result of miscommunication.
After an Allied bomb attack, Rudolf and his wife took
cover in a bomb shelter already occupied by Adolf and
his family.
"The dirty bastards are back again," Adolf said,
apparently referring to the planes, but Rudolf thought
the comment was an attack against his family.
By the war's end, the brothers had split the company
and waged a war of their own in the business arena.

What happened next..??

Adolf, who preferred to be called Adi, named his
business Adidas, combining his first and last
names. Although it is popularly claimed that the
name is anacronymforAll Day I Dream About
Sport.
Rudolf tried the same with his firm called Ruda,
though he later changed it to Puma Schuhfabrik
Rudolf Dassler. And after that officially declaring it
to Puma

Rivalry Between the Duo

Puma and Adidas entered a fierce and bitter rivalry after the
split.
The town of Herzogenaurach was divided on the issue, leading
to the nickname "the town of bent necks"people looked down
to see which shoes strangers wore.
When handymen were called to Rudolf's home, they would
deliberately wear Adidas shoes. Rudolf would tell them to go to
the basement and pick out a pair of free Pumas.
The two brothers never reconciled, and although both are
buried in the same cemetery, they are spaced apart as far as
possible.
