Are interested in joining?

Join us Thursday 22 for our

first meeting. We will meet in
the cafeteria after school.

Vocabulary: Starting this week we

will be starting vocabulary lists.
Prefixes:

Suffixes:

1.Bio = life
2.Eu = true
3.Pro = before
4.Archeo = ancient
5.Cyto = cell

6. ology = study of
7. ose = sugar
8. ase = enzyme
9. kary = nucleus
10. saccharide =
sugar

How do you know something is

living?

Make a list on the board as a class.

7. Metabolism

7 Characteristics of Life notes

1. Cells

At least one cell or multi-cellular. Cells

have specialized structures.

2. Response

The ability of an organism to respond to

stimuli or changes.

3. Reproduction

4. Growth and
development

All living organisms have to reproduce

(sexually or asexually)

All living organisms exhibit growth.

Multi-cellular organisms add cells and
unicellular organisms get larger.

5. Evolution

In order for an organism to survive it

must adapt to its environment.

6. Homeostasis

All organisms must maintain

homeostasis in order to survive.

7. Metabolism

The chemicals inside the organism

chemically react to the help it stay
alive.

Is it made of cells card sort.

Prokaryotes Vs Eukaryotes
Eukaryotes
Rhymes with
do
All living cells
except bacteria

Nucleus (DNA found here)

Complex cells
Has membranes around
organelles
Both unicellular / multicellular

Prokaryotes
Rhymes with
no
Only bacteria

No nucleus (DNA floats in cell)

Simple cells
No membranes around

The Cell Theory

There are 3 parts to the cell theory:
1. All living things have cells
2. All cells came from pre-existing (cell that were
already here) cells.
3. The cell is the basic unit of life.
Example:

Cellular Organization:

Cells make up tissues,

Tissues make up Organs
Organs make up Systems
Many systems make up us.

Blood cells make up the tissue blood

Blood tissue is part of the blood
vessels
Blood vessels are part of the
circulatory system that makes up you!

Animal Cells
They have a random shape due to the

& protects the cell. It allows particles in and

The cell is filled with 2) cytoplasm =

jellylike liquid material that holds the
organelles within the cell.

material inside the nucleus made of threadlike
strands (DNA) that actually controls the cell.

One structure is the 5) mitochondria = organelle that

breaks energy bonds to release stored energy for cell
processes (power house)

Another structure is the 6) endoplasmic reticulum (ER)

or (inside the jelly is a maze.) It is channels that help
transport and assemble (put together) proteins and

other materials.

Located on the ER are the 7) ribosomes = which

synthesize (build) proteins needed for growth and
repair of the cell.

After leaving the ER, proteins enter the 8) golgi

apparatus = which takes the proteins from ER
and assembles the proteins and packages them

Plant Cells
One difference between animal and plant cells is that plant cells
have a much more rigid exterior because they have a 1) cell
wall = rigid layer which surrounds the cell membrane and
provides extra support for the plant

Plant cells do have 2) cell membrane just like an

animal cell

Plant cells have 3) cytoplasm also

A plant cell still has a 4) nucleus with
