LESSON OBJECTIVES

We are learning to:

-Design a good questionnaire that allows us to make
decisions about the style and content of our own
music video.

The first thing to decide on

before designing a
questionnaire is to decide
what you want to find out.
What do you need to ask
people about their taste in
music videos so that you
can make your own?

On a post it, in pairs, write down 3

things you will need to know to make
an effective music video (and then
explain the choices you made when
you evaluate it).
What do you need to ask
people about their taste in
music videos so that you
can make your own?

Questionnaires
Rules
Never ask a leading question designed to get a particular
response.
Never ask a personal, irrelevant question.
Keep each question as simple as possible.
Include questions that will get a response from whomever is
asked.
Make sure the categories for the responses do not overlap and
keep the number of choices to a reasonable number (six at the
most).

What is your age?

This is personal. Many people will not
want to answer. It is always better to give
a range of ages such as:
Under 15 1620 2130 3140
Over 40

Narrative videos are often seen as more

entertaining than performance. Do you
agree?
This is a leading question, designed to get
a yes. It is better ask an impersonal
question such as:
Do you prefer a music video to have a
story to it? Yes No

According to the Uses and Gratifications

theory, why do you watch music videos?
This can be answered only by those who
have an understanding of this theory.
It is better to put it in terms that everyone
can understand:
Do you watch music videos because:
a) You want to escape reality Yes No
b) You feel you identify with the star Yes No
c) You enjoy watching the star Yes No

When you watch a music video do you

notice the star first, the special effects, the
music and lyrics and whether they match
or whether there is an interesting story ?
This question is too complicated. It is better
to ask a series of shorter questions such
as:
Why do you watch music videos?
The musician
The story
Entertainment

Planning Your Questions

In Pairs: Come up with 10 questions
that you would like to ask

Team up with another pair: Share

your question ideas and come up
with your best 3 questions to
feedback to the class.

Design Your Questionnaire

Homework:
Design your own questionnaire and ask at
least 10 people to answer it for you. Bring
the results to Thursdays lesson as we will
be looking at how to analyse them.
