PHASED ARRAY MODE:

OVERVIEW and PERFORMANCE

Phased Array Mode Overview

Phased Array Mode: Standard Group Menus

Phased Array Mode - Overview

Phased Array Imaging The EPOCH 1000 Series provides manual phased
array imaging capabilities, either standard or optional, based on the following:
EPOCH 1000 Optional imaging requiring hardware/software upgrade
EPOCH 1000iR Optional imaging requiring only software upgrade
EPOCH 1000i Standard imaging capabilities

Manual Imaging Manual

imaging means that the
images acquired cannot be
encoded. The EPOCH 1000
Series phased array
capabilities is designed for
hand scanning applications to
augment conventional
techniques.

Phased Array Mode - Overview

Angle Beam Inspections
Phased array angle beam inspection typically provides two views:

Sector Scan This image represents

a composite of A-scans across a
range of angles (typically 40to 70).
This sector scan shows amplitude
data of each angle in the angular
coverage area at the same time.

A-scan An individual A-scan is

displayed from the sector scan. This
A-scan represents a single angle,
and is selected using a cursor.
A-scan at 60(selected)

Phased Array Mode - Overview

Straight Beam Inspections
Phased array straight beam inspection typically provides two views:

Sector Scan This image represents

a composite of A-scans across a
range of angles (typically -30 to
+30). This sector scan shows
amplitude data of each angle in the
angular coverage area at the same
time, including the 0 A-scan.

A-scan An individual A-scan is

displayed from the sector scan. This
A-scan represents a single angle,
and is selected using a cursor. This
is usually the 0 A-scan in straight
beam applications.

A-scan at 0(selected)

Phased Array Mode - Performance

Automated Gain (Sensitivity) Calibration The EPOCH 1000 Series features an

automated sensitivity calibration procedure during phased array setup. This automated
procedure, based on the OmniScan sensitivity calibration, allows the user to capture the
peak amplitude response from a single reflector (usually side drilled hole) across all
imaging angles (focal laws). The instrument then uses this amplitude capture to adjust
gain at each angle (focal law) to position the amplitude from this reflector at 80% FSH for
every A-scan.

Gain Calibration
Curve

Phased Array Mode - Performance

Automated Wedge Delay Calibration The EPOCH 1000 Series features an automated
wedge delay calibration procedure during phased array setup. This automated
procedure, based on the OmniScan wedge delay calibration, allows the user to capture
the TOF/distance measurement from a single reflector across all imaging angles (focal
laws). The instrument then uses this TOF/distance capture to adjust the wedge delay at
each angle (focal law) to provide correct TOF/distance measurements for every A-scan.

Wedge Delay
Calibration Curve

Phased Array Mode - Performance

Image Smoothing Phased array imaging is based on

composited amplitude responses of multiple A-scans.
In many instances, A-scans can have multiple peaks
when reflected from a single defect. This can affect
the clarity of the S-scan. The EPOCH 1000 Series,
therefore, allows the user to select stepped image
smoothing, applied to both the A-scan and S-scan, to
provide clearer images without significant impact on
the precision of the measurement.

Phased Array Mode - Performance

Frozen Image Analysis The EPOCH 1000i allows A-scan and image review and
analysis while in FREEZE mode
Raw A-scan data available for all angles/focal laws
Full Gain, Gate and Cursor adjustment
A-scan indication measurements live
Image sizing cursors available for X2 X1 and/or Y2 Y1 indication sizing

Phased Array Software Features

Standard Sizing and Evaluation Techniques
Coming soon in early 2009!
As with conventional UT mode, the phased array mode incorporates
the following standard sizing techniques:
DAC/TVG
DGS/AVG
AWS

These techniques are critical to allowing the EPOCH 1000i to be fully

compliant with conventional codes, while still providing imaging
benefits.

Phased Array Mode Software Features

DAC/TVG
The EPOCH 1000i has the capability to create a TVG setup during sensitivity
(gain) calibration, as demonstrated earlier. This TVG setup is the same process
as acquiring a DAC curve it allows the user to reference the amplitude response
of a known reflector at varying depths within the test piece.
The EPOCH 1000i will allow the user to utilize this simple TVG setup mode during
sensitivity (gain) calibration to create an individual DAC curve for every focal law.

DAC curve will only be viewable on the selected A-scan

DAC measurements will be active for the selected A-scan
S-scan will always display in TVG view
Available in early 2009

Phased Array Mode Software Features

DGS/AVG
The EPOCH 1000i also has the capability to create a DGS/AVG setup. However,
since DGS/AVG is only valid for qualified probes at certain fixed angles, the
DGS/AVG curves will not apply to all focal laws.
The EPOCH 1000i will allow the user to utilize a similar setup menu as the
DGS/AVG conventional setup, to calculate DGS/AVG curves for specified focal
laws (typically 45, 60 and 70).
Atlas-DGS Phased Array Probes must be used
4L16-DGS1
2L8-DGS1

DGS/AVG curve will only be viewable on the selected A-scan

DGS/AVG measurements will be active for the selected A-scan
Available in early 2009

Phased Array Mode Software Features

AWS D1.1/D1.5 Weld Rating Software
The EPOCH 1000i will have the capability to evaluate the D weld indication value
according to the AWS calculation of A-B-C=D for all three standard inspection
angles (45, 60 and 70). This will allow the user to comply with the AWS code
while gaining inspection speed and confidence.
The EPOCH 1000i will allow the user to turn on the AWS feature and select a
desired reference gain level (AWS stipulates over 50% FSH). The user will then
use a tool similar to the sensitivity calibration tool to acquire a RefB value for all
focal laws at once.
AWS Phased Array Probe should be used
2,25L16-AWS1

Multi-law mode will be active, allowing the operator to only view A-scans that
represent 45, 60 and 70.
Available in early 2009

TROUBLESHOOTING

Troubleshooting Techniques
It is important, especially early in a product release, to identify ways to
correct common issues or software glitches. This section describes three
methods of correcting instrument failures and/or problems.
Instrument Resets
Hard Reset
Compact Flash Reset

Troubleshooting Techniques
Instrument Resets
The EPOCH 1000 Series has several instrument resets built into the software

Location: FILE group menu, RESETS

parameter menu

Parameter cannot be adjusted
Function/parameter seems to be
missing
Instrument is operational but
acting funny
Resets include:
Master/Database clears data logger,
restores default parameters
Parameters maintains data logger,
restores default parameters

Troubleshooting Techniques
Hard Reset
The EPOCH 1000 Series features an external, hard reset function

Create a file on a USB memory stick called reset.txt

File does not need to contain anything, just have this
exact name/extension

Turn off the instrument

Plug USB memory stick into instrument
Turn on the instrument
Corrects Symptoms:
Unit will not finish loading after initial start up
Strange functions and crashes that instrument resets do
not solve

Reset clears data logger and restores factory default

settings to instrument

Troubleshooting Techniques
Compact Flash Clear
The EPOCH 1000i stores limited phased array probe information on the Compact
Flash card. If this data gets corrupted, clearing the flash card may solve any
issues.

Resets any custom phased array probe setups

Corrects Symptoms:
Instrument displays a PA_Benchmark.exe error upon boot up
Instrument will not complete boot up after a software upgrade

Rare requirement
User must have a Compact Flash reader to perform the clear
Simply delete all files on flash card, return to instrument and
turn on
