B. Limitation of the Problem


This research is using the Encarta
encyclopedia at the SMK Muhammadiyah 2
Kediri specially focus on class X TPM as
experimental class, which consists of 50
Students. The researcher uses this class because
its a favorite class and almost all students have
good motivation in learning English. Its
expected that by using Encarta, the researcher
will encourage their motivation and interest to
learn English.

E. Significance of the Research


1. English teachers of senior high school
The result of this study is to give a guideline for the teachers of English to
improve students knowledge of vocabulary. The teachers can anticipate specific
problems when they teach common cases of the vocabulary for the first year
students of senior high school.
2. Senior high school students
It is important for the students to realize their mistakes after they have been
given an explanation and then tested with Encarta encyclopedia can improve the
vocabulary mastery. The answers will be discussed together with the students;
therefore, they will not make the second mistakes.
3. Other Researchers
The result of this research can be a reference for other researchers who want to
conduct the further research on the similar problems, by using another design,
such as an experimental research or a classroom action research to develop their
students ability in learning English.

A. Foreign Language Learning and Teaching

Learning a foreign language is not as easy as learning


native language. In learning a foreign language, the
learners may meet all kinds of learning problems dealing
with vocabulary, sound system, and how to arrange words
into sentences that are quite different from those native
languages. In line with this, Ramelan (1994: 4) states:
If someone wants to learn a foreign language, he will
obviously meet with all kinds of learning problems. The
difficulties have to do with the learning of sounds system,
the learning of new vocabulary items, and the learning of
the unfamiliar ways of arranging the foreign words into
sentences.

Vocabulary is one of the language components
which has to be mastered by the students in
learning a new language. They students will get

C. The Importance of Vocabulary in English


The most important thing in learning language
especially English is learning vocabulary. Without
vocabulary we can not speak, write, and
understand what we are reading and listening.
Mastering vocabulary is a basic matter in learning
foreign language. David Wilkins (Thornbury,
2002: 13) summed up that without grammar very
little can be conveyed, without vocabulary
nothing can be conveyed. Dellar H and Hocking
(Thornbury, 2002: 13) also stated "if you spend
most of your time studying vocabulary, your
English will not improve very much

A person's reading vocabulary is all the words he or she
can recognize

1. Selecting vocabulary
Part of the problem in teaching vocabulary lies in the fact that
whilst there is a consensus about what grammatical structure
should be thought at what levels the same is hardly true of
vocabulary.

We have said that vocabulary is as the important as the
teaching of structure, and in the following example we will
look at a range of activities which are designed to teach and
practice words and their various uses. We will look at

Encarta Encyclopedia is a comprehensive
resource program with over 36,000 articles and
19,000 web links. The program has three main
features: Find, Encarta Explorer, and Media &
Online Features. The find option allows the user
to scroll through articles or simply type in areas
of interest. The program pulls up a major article,
along with related articles and web links. Encarta
Explorer offers a multimedia option for gathering
information within a variety of categories and

G. Kind of Encarta encyclopedia


1.Encarta Dictionary
When Encarta was released as part of the "Reference Suite" in 1998 (through
to 2000), Microsoft bundled "Microsoft Bookshelf" with the other programs
(Encarta Encyclopedia 98 Deluxe Edition, Encarta Desk Atlas, Encarta Virtual
Globe 98, Encarta World English Dictionary and Encarta Research Organizer).
However, this was redundant.
2. Encarta kids
Encarta Kids is an exciting addition to an already outstanding encyclopedia suite.
However, it could have been better. Since it is for young children, it should have
more content that can be read out loud. Also, while the articles are easier to read
than those found in Encarta Encyclopedia, they contain words that some kids don't
know. Unlike other sections of Encarta, kids can't click on a difficult word to have
it defined in the suite's integrated dictionary.

H. Rationale
Vocabulary has a very important part in teaching learning
process. But, some language learners consider that it is to be the most
difficult language skill. This difficulties caused by many problems.
Some of them are rate of delivery; stress, rhythm, and intonation.
Well, it needs to be studied seriously and diligently.
Teaching vocabulary in Senior High School is influenced by
many factors; one of them is the media used by the teacher in
teaching learning process. The suitable media will help the students
to understand the material easily. The media of teaching must be
appropriated with the students ability and the students characteristic
to create an interesting atmosphere in teaching learning process.
Because of it the teacher should find the appropriate media to make
the students understand about vocabulary easily

A. Research Variable
In every research, it is important to know the variable that is going to
be observed. Before the writer determines the variable of the research, it
is better if we know the meaning of variable.
As stated by Sugiyono (2009: 38) that variable is anything which is
decided by the researcher to be learned so the researcher gets the
information about it, than the researcher will get the conclusion. It means
that Encarta encyclopedia is something that will be the object of the
research in getting the data. Based on the title of this research, the writer
finds that this research has two variables. They are dependent variable and
independent variable.
In this research under title The influence of using Encarta
encyclopedia to the students vocabulary mastery at the first year students
of smk muhammadiah 2 kediri, independent variable is Encarta
encyclopedia and dependent variable is students vocabulary mastery

The method and approach used in this
research is descriptive quantitative because
the researcher wants to find out whether or
not there is any significant the influence

vocabulary mastery at the first year
students of SMK muhammadiyah 2 Kediri

D. Subject of the Research


In this research, the subject of the research was the
firs students of SMK muhammadiyah 2 Kediri,
in the academic year of 2011/2012. There was
only one class consisting of 50 students.

E. Instrument of the Research


There are many kinds of instrument such as, interview,
observation, and documentation. In this research, the researcher
uses instrument to get the data, the instrument is documentation.
The documentation is a type of technique to obtain the data
which have already been existing. The documentation in this
research is the score of the influence using Encarta encyclopedia
to improve vocabulary mastery subject that are taken from the
teachers document. Since, the score of vocabulary mastery are
obtained from documentation; the researcher is required to check
the validity and reliability of both vocabulary and speaking tests
used by the teachers.

F. Technique of Collecting the Data


In this research, the technique of collecting the data used
by the writer is vocabulary test. The writer collects the data by
asking the students to answer the following questions about
Narrative text. There are two processes of collecting the data:
A. Pre-test
The teacher asks the students to answer the questions based on
the text which is read by the teacher.
B. Post-test
The teacher asks the students to answer the questions based on
a text which is vocabulary from Encarta encyclopedia.

G. The Technique of Data Analyzing


The technique of data analysis used by the writer is T-test. This technique
is used to prove the hypothesis based on the writer said in previous
chapter. From this process, the writer will know whether this research is
significant or not by looking at the result of pre test and post test.
Based on Arikunto (2006: 306), the formula of t-test non independent
sample is:
