Organic Light Emitting Diode
(OLED)
OLED Components

Substrate: Supports the OLED.

Anode (transparent): Adds electron
"holes”, when current flows through OLED
Organic layers: Organic molecules or
polymers.
Conducting layer: Transport "holes"
from the anode.
Emissive layer: Transport electrons
from the cathode
Cathode: Injects electrons when current
flows through OLED.
OLED Working
Types of OLEDs
Type Used In Characteristic
Passive-matrix Cell phones, PDAs & MP3 Best for text & Icons; Small
OLED players Screens (D:2-3 in)
Active-matrix Computer monitors, large- Efficient for large displays
OLED screen TVs and electronic faster refresh rates suitable for
signs or billboards video
Transparent Heads-up displays Transparent components (up
OLED to 85%)
Top-emitting Smart1 cards Substrate is either opaque or
OLED reflective

Foldable OLED Cell phones, PDAs, GPS Flexible plastic substrates

receiver, "smart“1 clothing Lightweight and Durable
White OLED Fluorescent lights used in Brighter & Uniform White Light
homes and offices more energy efficient
true-colour qualities
