What is animation?

successive positions of inanimate
objects same as puppets or
mechanical parts.

zoetrope is a spinning device that
demonstrates how a series of
individual pictures, glimpsed by the
eye, are perceived as a fluid motion
picture.

Thaumatrope comes from the


Greek roots "Thauma" means magic
in Greek and "trope" refers to
something that turns. The
thaumatrope is somewhat magical
because it creates illusions
dependent on persistence of vision.

Phenakistoscope - The Spinning


Wonder, invented in 1831
simultaneously by Austrian Simon
von Stampfer and Belgian Joseph
Plateau. Includes simple drawings
moving simultaneously give the
effect of animation. As you spin the
Thaumatrope disc, you can see each
picture long enough to have two
images merge into one.

Flipbook - patented in 1868 by

John Linnet. It is a series of


sequential pictures which when
flipped at high speed creates an
illusion of motion.

Praxinoscope a more complicated


version of zoetrope invented by
Charles-Emile Reynaud which
included steady mirrors inside.

Magic lantern is considered as

the classic projector which


includes a simple lamp and
translucent oil painting which
projects larger image on a flat
surface
