PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT

Definition
Portfolio assessment is an assessment form that learners do
together with their teachers. It works as an alternative to the
classic classroom test. It contains samples of the learner's work
(student-developed artifacts) and shows growth over time. In
portfolio assessment, it is the quality that counts, not the
quantity.

as

Learning objectives

Each portfolio entry needs to be assessed with reference to

its specific learning objectives or goals.

The reflections should say something about :

Why they have made the choices they have made in the portfolio;
Description about the method used to arrive at the final result
If two learners submit the same work for assessment, the individual
reflections may make the difference.
Even if a learner has failed with the content presented in the
assessment portfolio to a certain degree, he or she might be rewarded
for mature reflections on the work.

Different schools may create different forms of portfolios.

Some schools create portfolios that are a representative
sample of the learners' work, while other schools use the
portfolios as an assessment tool that can be an alternative
to classical classroom tests and standardized teacher
evaluation.

Types of Portfolios

Showcase Portfolios
Showcase portfolios highlight the best products over a particular
time period or course.
For example, a showcase portfolio in a composition class may
include the best examples of different writing genres, such as an
essay, a poem, a short story, a biographical piece, or a literary
analysis.
Students are often allowed to choose what they believe to be their
best work, highlighting their achievements and skills. Showcase
reflections typically focus on the strengths of selected pieces and
discuss how each met or exceeded required standards.

Process portfolios
Process portfolios concentrate more on the journey of
learning rather than the final destination or end products of
the learning process.
In the composition class, for example, different stages of the
processan outline, first draft, peer and teacher responses,
early revisions, and a final edited draftmay be required.
A process reflection may discuss why a particular strategy
was used, what was useful or ineffective for the individual in
the writing process, and how the student went about making
progress in the face of difficulty in meeting requirements.

Evaluation portfolios
Evaluation portfolios has basic purpose : to exhibit a series of
evaluations over a course and the learning or accomplishments of the
student in regard to previously determined criteria or goals.
This type of portfolio documents tests, observations, records, or other
assessment artifacts required for successful completion of the course.
E.g. :
A math evaluation portfolio may include tests, quizzes, and written
explanations of how one went about solving a problem or determining
which formula to use, whereas a science evaluation portfolio might also
include laboratory experiments, science project outcomes with photos
or other artifacts, and research reports, as well as tests and quizzes.

Online / e-portfolios
Online or e-portfolios may be one of the previously
mentioned portfolio types or a combination of different
types, a general requirement being that all information
and artifacts are somehow accessible online. A number
of colleges require students to maintain a virtual
portfolio that may include digital, video, or Web-based
products.
Students are able to visually track and show their
accomplishments to a wide audience.

Benefits
Individualised way of assessing students and have the
advantage of demonstrating a wide range of work.
Can enhance students maturity and metacognitive
thinking.
Provide an authentic way of demonstrating skills and
accomplishments.

PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
It evaluates the development of the students
in a particular skill or knowledge.
The assessment can be done through
observation, result of a product etc.
Eg:
-ability in in speaking skill
-ability in listening skill

CHARACTERISTICS OF PERFORMANCE
ASSESSMENT
Must authentic activities (process/product)
Must be meaningful, HOTS
Emphasizes on ones deep understanding in a
research not the wide scope of it.
