Integration: You strive to get other people to like you

e.g.: imitate subordinates actions
Convince other people of your accomplishments
e.g.: remind a boss of past achievement
You aim to create the impression that we are morally
virtuous and righteous e.g.: follows org. culture,
staying late
Using Flattery e.g.: complementing the manager for
handling situation
Beliefs and behaviors are consistent- you show you
are tough & sincere e.g.: looking your boss in the
eye when making a statement-honest

People are sensitive to

how they are seen by
others and use many
forms of impression
management to compel
others to react to them
in the ways they wish

Body language Impression

management

Body Language
60 to 90 percent of our
communication with
others is nonverbal

Importance of a good
first impression
first few minutes of meeting
someone,
The are already making
decisions
what the other person's
intentions are
whether or not the person is
credible

the way you

communicate
nonverbally in those first
few crucial minutes after
meeting someone new-could make or break
what potentially could
be a very important
business relationship

Professor Albert Mehrabian of UCLA broke

communication down into 3 V's as follows:

VISUAL

The message
itself- the
words you
use

The sound of
your voice,
intonation,
projection,
pitch & speed
of your voice

The posture
& gestures,
facial
expression
and eye
movement
that people
see

The key to formulating a

positive impression:
VOCAL
Avoid uh, ahs
Constant Throat
clearing
Think before
speaking- nicer
ways of
asking/saying

VERBAL
Sound of your voice
Intonation- Make or
break a sentence
and its importance
speed of your voice

VISUAL: Create the Positive Body

Posture
back straight not rigid,
shoulders relaxed so you
don't look too uptight

Mirror the body

language
Observe!
showing you are in
agreement and that you
like--or are sincerely trying
to like--the person you are
with

Align your body with the

person you're talking to-this shows you're engaged
Lean in a bit--this shows
focus and that you really
are listening

Eyes
keep good eye contact, do
not blink too much (rapid
blinking signals uncomfort)

Arms and legs

Keep your legs apart and a
bit instead of crossed--this
demonstrates that you're
relaxed,
hands on your side:
uncrossed/ not defiant or
aggressive

and all the men and women merely players.

They have their exits and their entrances, and one
man in his time plays many parts

And so it is. Much of our time is spent in the company of others, and much
of this time we are playing a role.

Conclusion
Impression management is a self-presentation technique that focuses on improving a
persons image in the eyes of others

serves three important functions:

It helps facilitate social interaction;
It enables individuals to attain material and social rewards;
It helps people privately construct desired identities.
