Scientific Question & Hypothesis

Scientific Question: How does music affect test
performance?
Hypothesis:
If someone listens to music while performing a test,
then they will finish quicker with better results because
I believe music can wake up your brain and allow you
to concentrate better and work faster.

Materials & Experimental Designs

Materials

Experimental Design

6 students from the

9th grade
18 identical tests
1 answer key
3 music-playing
devices
A timer
3 earphones
6 pencils

Diagram 1: This shows the 6 students

that helped me perform this
experiment. They are divided into 2
groups, 3 students are listening to
music and 3 are not.

Diagram 2: Here is the basic test

all the students had to perform
THIS is a short video of
how the experiment went

Procedure
Step 1: Six copies of an identical basic math test that included addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division problems were printed, along with the answer key
Step 2: Six students in the 9th grade with a similar GPA were chosen to perform the
test
Step 3: Three of those six students performed the test while listening to music
Step 4: The other three performed the test without any music
Step 5: The time it took for each student to complete the worksheet was recorded
using a timer and the papers were graded for mistakes using the answer key
Step 6: The average of the results and time finished for each group was calculated
Step 7: The experiment was repeated 2 more times

Results: Graphs

Graph 1: This is the average of the grades of the

group that listened to music while performing the
test.

Graph 2: This is the average of the grades of the

group that DIDN'T listen to music while performing the
test.

Results: Graphs

Graph 3: This is how fast the group of people

listening to music while performing the test finished.

Graph 4: This is how fast the group of people who

DIDN'T listen to music while performing the test
finished.

Results: Discussion
The tables above clearly show my calculations. I calculated the average of how many minutes
each group took to finish the test, and also calculated the average of the results of each group
that took the test. I then put that data into four different bar graphs. Graph 1 shows the average
results of the group listening to music into three different trials, Graph 2 shows the average
results of the group not listening to music into three different trials, Graph 3 shows the average
time (in minutes) it took for the group listening to music to finish into three different trails,
Graph 4 shows the average time (in minutes) it took for the group not listening to music into
three different trials. Graph 1 & 2 clearly show that the group not listening to music got a
higher average in terms of results. Graph 3 & 4 clearly show that the group listening to music
got a higher average in terms of time.

Acknowledgements
I would like to thank all the students who helped me out in
the project by giving the time to take the tests Ive prepared.
These students are Rama Khatatbeh, Mazen Hussein,
Zackaria Abdu, Zareen Moyed, Justin Rbiez, and Anam
Salman. I would also like to thank my parents for taking me to
get supplies I needed and being there for any concerns I had.
Lastly, I would like to thank my science teacher, Ms. Mao, for
giving be advice and suggestions on how to improve my
project and make it the best it can be.
