Thermal Power Plant

Constituents: The Thermal Power Plant is basically divided into
four parts. They are as follow: 1. Coal Handling Plant (CHP): - Fuel from the storage

is fed to the boiler through fuel handling device. The

fuel used in S.S.T.P.S. is coal, which on combustion
in the boiler produces ash.
2. Ash Handling Plant (AHP):- The ash produced is

collected in the boiler and is removed to ash storage

tank. Ash produced are of two types: -

(i) wet ash

(ii) dry ash
In S.S.T.P.S both types of ash are utilized in an
economical way.

3. Water Treatment Plant: - In Water

Treatment Plant Water is treated so that
no impurities are left in the water to make
it suitable for the working process of
Power Plant.
4. Boiler, Turbine, Generator and Control
Unit: These are the
parts where steam is generated and
operated. In the Control Unit each and
everything is controlled including auxiliary
as well as main equipment.

1. COAL HANDLING PLANT (CHP)

The function of CHP is automatic feeding of coal

to the boiler furnace. The coal is transported to the
power station by rail..About 18000 tonnes coal
required per day for whole unit.

2. ASH HANDLING PLANT (AHP)

Coal contains a considerable amount of ash. The
percentage of ash in the coal varies from about 5% in good
quality coals to about 40% in poor quality coals.
Generally poor quality coal is used in steam power plant, so
the plant produces hundred tones of ash daily.
For removal of ash from the boilers and its disposal to the
suitable site is quite difficult.
Ash handling comprises the following operation:
1. Removal of ash from the furnace ash hoppers.
2. Transfer of ash to a fill or storage
3. Disposal of stored ash.

3.

Hydraulic system:

In this system stream of water carries

ash along with it in a Closed channel and disposes it of
to the proper site. This is the healthy clean dustless and
completely enclosed system.
The water is used again while the ash is sent out
through the carriages.

4. BOILER:
It is a closed vessel in which water is heated
to generate steam.

GENERATOR

ELECTRICAL
ENERGY

Shaft is connected to a generator. This generator

produces the electricity required. From this point the
electricity produced is sent to the Electrical Switchyard
via transformers. Since generator is producing
electricity and is working continuously heat is
generated in this part also. And hence cooling of
generator is also important.
Generator is cooled using Hydrogen Gas.

TURBINE
In a Thermal Power Plant generally 3 turbines are used to increase
the efficiency.

.High Pressure Turbine(HPT): The superheated steam is directly

fed to this
turbine to rotate it.
Intermediate Pressure Turbine(IPT): The out put from the HPT is
reheated In a reheated(RH) and used to rotate IPT .
Low Pressure Turbine(LPT): The Exhausted steam from the IPT is
directly
fed to rotate the shaft of LPT.

Control Unit : In Control Room various controls are

provided simultaneously various

measurement are made. The unit Control
Room has a set of parameter panels for
indicating and recording parameters of
boiler and turbo sets
