Definition of Narrative Text


Narrative text is a story with
complication among the
characters. It tries to find the
resolutions to solve the problems.

What is the purpose of Narrative Text..?

The Purpose of Narrative Text:

The Purpose of Narrative Text is to amuse or to


entertain the readers or listeners with a story.

What is the GENERIC STRUCTURE of NT..?

The Generic Structures of Narrative


Text
1. Orientation
it sets the scene: who and what is
involved in the story or where and
when the story happened.
2. Complication
It tells the beginning of the problems
which leads to the crisis.

3. Resolution
it is where the problem is resolved it can
be a happy ending or a sad (tragic) ending.

4. Re-orientation / Coda
this is a closing remark to the story
and it is optional. It consists a moral
lesson advise or teaching from the writer

The Characteristics of Narrative Text


Using the Action Verb in the form of Past Tense.
For example: Climbed, Turned, Brought, etc.
Using specific nouns as a personal pronoun,
certain animals and objects in the story. For
example: the king, the queen, and etc.
Using adjectives that make up the noun phrase.
For example: long black hair, two red apples, etc.
Using time connectives and Conjunctions to sort
events. For example: then, before, after, soon, etc.
Using Adverbs and Adverbial Phrase to show the
location of the incident or event. For example:
here, in the mountain, happily ever after, and etc.
Using direct speech. For example: He said, I am
reading a magazine now.
Using indirect speech. For example: He said that
he was reading a magazine then.

The Example of Narrative Text


A story of the ant and the grasshopper

In a field, one-one summers day, a


grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and
singing to its hearts content. An ant passed
by, bearing along with great toil of corns, he
was taking them to the nest.
why not come and chat with me, said the
grasshopper, instead to toiling and moiling in
that way?
I am helping to lay up food for the winter,
said the ant, and recommend you to do the
same.
why bother about the winter? said the
grasshopper. we have got plenty of food at
present. the ant went on its way and
continued its toil.
When the winter came, the grasshopper
found itself dying of hunger. While the ants
were distributing corn and grain from the
stories they had collected in the summer.
