Geothermal HVAC (Heating Ventilating Air Conditioning)

Introduction

Difference between Standard HVAC and

Geothermal HVAC:

Standard Air Conditioning System:

Introduction
Geothermal Air Conditioning System:

Outside Air Temp. 35C

Ground Temp. 20C

Types of loops

Polyethylene pipe is the mostly

used for geothermal applications

There are 3 types of

configurations of ground loops:
1- Horizontal closed loop

2- Vertical closed loop

3- Open loop

Cooling Load Calculation

Using tabulated data, simple

calculations is done for finding
the cooling load required to
reject the heat from the room.
The cooling load calculated
is Q = 6.24 KW which is equal to
the heat rejected by the
condenser since the refrigerant
used is water and assumption
steady state was taken.

Ground Loop Analysis

In order to reject 6.24 KW into the ground the following temperatures

are obtained.
Temperature leaving the geothermal loop: 29.4C
Temperature entering geothermal loop: 32.36 C

Ground Loop Analysis

The Loop System consists of :

6 loops
3 different pipe sizing in
order to make a Pressure drop
leading to flow of water in
loops

Ground Loop Analysis

Calculating the length of the loops was in need to know the total resistance
inside the loop.
oConvection Resistance: 0.012 x Length of pipe
oConduction Resistance:0.069 x length of pipe
oGround Resistance due to Conduction Shape Factor: 0.39 x Length of pipe
oTotal Heat rejected by one loop: 1035.97W
oLength of one loop 164 m
oLength of 6 loops 984 m

Conclusion
In this project we developed a Geothermal Air Conditioning System for a room.
We calculated the cooling load for a single room.
We selected the type of the pipes used and the configuration for the ground
loops.
We calculated the suitable loop length required for rejecting the heat into the
ground.
Although installing a geothermal heat pump it is more expensive than the
Standard HVAC of same cooling capacity, we can recoup the additional costs in
energy savings in 5 to 6 years (ground heat exchanging to cool the water, that
cools the condenser consumes less energy).
