Monitoring
M P Rogers and Associates Pty Ltd

Overview of Port Coogee Development

Located south of Perth, Western

Australia
Construction started in 2006
Includes 1.6 km of breakwaters
and seawalls
Approval of development required
a Coastal Monitoring programme
Programme includes annual beach
inspections, analysis of beach
profiles and sand bypassing

Location and Surroundings

Located within Owen Anchorage

Shoreline is isolated from external
longshore drift due to Fremantle Port
and Woodman Pt structures
Two offshore sandbanks supply
sediment
Numerous coastal structures present
in the area

Coastal Processes
Public Environmental Review
(PER) included investigation of
coastal processes in Owen
Anchorage
Predevelopment sediment fluxes
were estimated
Net transport of sediment
southwards to Port Coogee of
5,000 m3/yr
Erosion predicted for shoreline
south of development (including
popular swimming beach)
m p rogers & associates pl

Coastal Monitoring

51 profiles covering 4km of

coastline
Surveys of the coastline in March
and October since 2005
Profiles extend from Catherine Point
to Explosives Jetty
Extend from the rear of the primary
dune to approximately 300 m
offshore
m p rogers & associates pl

Coastal Monitoring

Profile 2 is north of Port Coogee,

located south of Catherine Point
Large initial erosions of the dune that
have recently slowed

m p rogers & associates pl

Coastal Monitoring

Profile 19 is located on the north

side of Port Coogee
Consistent accretion
Sand removed in late 2009 for Sand
Bypassing

Port Coogee Waterways and Environmental Management

Plan (WEMP) requires analysis of
Overall profile movement
Movement of the 0 mAHD (waterline) and +2.5 mAHD (vegetation line)
contours
Total volumes of sediment movement

Movements of >5 m from Predevelopment positions are

investigated
Interannual variability in metocean conditions is
investigated through Rogers Storminess Index and analysis
of key wave event occurrences
m p rogers & associates pl

Coastal Monitoring
Profile

10 profiles were exceeding

trigger values by 2009
Majority of eroding profiles
located south of Port
Coogee
Causes of erosion for
Profiles 1 to 3 required
further investigation

Coastal Monitoring
Volumes calculated from
changes in beach profiles
2005 to 2009 sediment
budget (prior to sand
bypassing) shows less
accretion to the north of Port
Coogee than expected
Erosion to the south of Port
Coogee was greater than
expected
Sand Bypassing was
scheduled to occur in 2009

Sand Bypassing

WEMP requires that Sand Bypassing

be undertaken 3 & 6 years after
construction of Port Coogee
Development includes permanent
sand bypassing pipeline
Temporary connections span marina
mouth and inlet and outlet areas
Bypassing of approximately 15,000
m3 is required by WEMP

m p rogers & associates pl

Sand Bypassing

Bypassing was undertaken in November 2009

using a Hopper and excavators
Natural wave action was used to distribute the
bypassed sediment

m p rogers & associates pl

Results of Sand Bypassing

7/11/09

Approximately 15,000 m3 of
sand was bypassed over two
weeks in late 2009
The 2010 March and October
surveys showed 4 profiles to
the south of Port Coogee still
exceeded trigger values for MSL
recession
Potentially require greater
quantity of sand bypassed in
future
m p rogers & associates pl

3/12/09

Summary of Coastal Monitoring & Sand Bypassing

Analysis of 2010 beach surveys show nine

profiles exceed trigger values
Erosion of Profiles 1 to 3 is not due to Port
Coogee
Erosion of Profiles south of Port Coogee is
due to Port Coogee
2009 Sand Bypassing greatly improved the
profiles south of Port Coogee
Quantity of sand bypassed, insufficient to
restore profiles to predevelopment positions
2012 Sand Bypassing quantities may be
increased
