INTRODUCTION
Grab-A-Bike
It is basically a new mobility strategy that

involves a mobile application in order to book

a ride.
It is a public form of transportation that
provides a private ride. Meaning, it transports
you directly to the destination that you have
booked.

BACKGROUND OF THE
STUDY
As Baguio City continues to progress in

social, political, and economical factors, the

community needs an effective solution to
the usual effects of the said progress in
their transportation systems.
Observation:
(1) High volume of public utility vehicles like
Jeepneys and Taxicabs
(2) Narrow roads due to inappropriate
parking of private cars at both sides of the
roads
(3) Limited parking area

OBSERVATION

Tourism
Undoubtedly, Baguio City remains a prime tourist

destination area in North Luzon.

The City has accounted 65.44% of tourist arrivals to
the Cordillera Region since the regions inception.
Baguio City is also the gateway to other tourist
destinations in the North.
Almost always, tourists either come to the City only
or pass through on their way to other places in the
Cordillera.
This highlights the strategic role that Baguio City
plays in the regions tourism industry.

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Behavior

People will have a lesser waiting

time in falling in line with other
commuters in a certain spot within
the city. Also, they will have a
lesser travel time going to their
desired destination. These are due
to the 1:1 ratio as to the passenger
of Grab-A-Bike.

Transportation as Part of a
Broader System

Improves peoples accessibility to

other areas which results to an
increase in workers' ability to
access education and employment
opportunities
(increasing
their
productivity and incomes)
Increases residents' access to
more
shopping
opportunities
(providing financial savings)

Baguio. The route will be from a
specific neighborhood or Barangay
to the Central Business District and
vice versa. As to the out of town
destination, it could reach as far as
La Trinidad and other adjoining
towns of Itogon, Sablan, Tuba and
Tublay which are all located in

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Queuing and Storage

Queuing will not be a general

problem since the trip involves
booking, meaning, there is no
significant waiting time for the
passengers. Unless it is a peak
time of the day and that there is no
available Grab-A-Bike unit near the
area you are in.
Grab-A-Bike units would
strategically be located or stored
at the Central Business District to
make it more accessible and make
the people know that it exists.

Transfers

Feature: The passenger will be

transported directly to his desired
destination without any
inconvenience.
No transfers are required.

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Operating Policy

Policies regarding the motorized

vehicles will be merged and
connected with the policies of the
non-motorized vehicle for proper
synchronization
and
implementation of the policy.

Capacity

Baguios
Grab-A-Bike
could
accommodate approximately 10%
of the total demand for public
transport.
The motorcycle could transport
one passenger at a time.

Availability of Information

Updated optimal routes for

travelling are available via traffic
mapping on a mobile applications
such as Waze.
The details about how this form of
mobility works will be shown

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Infrastructure

There would only be a storage space for

the motorcycles if they are not in use or
if the driver takes a break. Other than
this facility, there would be no
infrastructure to be built.
This storage space would be build with
the inclusion of the GRAB office.
Inclusion of Grab-A-Bike will yield less
land use for the roads since motorcycles
occupy less space than cars.

Costs, Prices, and Level of

Service

Investments will be done to improve

the level of service. Such investments
will be done for the training of
motorcycle drivers to provide safer rides
in the unfriendly terrains of the city. This
will give safety to both of the rider and
the passenger. Aside from that, there will
be investments for safety gear for both
of them. With these investments, the

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Cost of Service

Usage of oil products such as

brake fluids and gasoline will
mostly define the cost of the
service.
Compared
to
other
vehicles, motorcycles yield lower
cost
than
that
of
taxicabs
(sedan/SUV) and jeepneys since
motorcycles consume less petrol
and use diesel which is cheaper
than gasoline.

Peaking

During a peak time which is

6:00PM 8:00PM, there is high
level of queue in the recreational
areas and this provides another
market for Grab-A-Bike.

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Multi-Dimensional Level of
Service

Level of service for Grab-a-bike

will be defined by its fast transport
since motorcycles beat traffic jams.
Other factors will include safety
since
motorcycles
have
a
reputation of being prone to
accidents. The idea of Grab-A-Bike
would consider training drivers to
become safer operators and also,
providing
safety
gears.
The
passengers luggage could also
affect level of service since
motorcycles do not provide so
much
space
for
carriages.
Therefore, the motorcycles that
Grab-A-Bike
provides
promote
luggage space awareness.
Grab-A-Bike will promote short

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Pricing

Pricing of Grab-A-Bike will be

relatively cheaper than taxicabs. So
it will attract more passengers in
taking the service. This will remove
externalities because there will be
more users of the service and the
taxicabs which occupy larger road
space will be lessened and traffic
flow will be smoother.

Imbalance in Flow

Dominance of Grab-A-Bike in the

city will have a great imbalance on
the
road
capacity
because
motorcycles occupy far less space
than taxicabs which are SUVs. With
this, it could make way for other
road
users
such
as
freight
transports

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Network Behavior and Capacity

Traffic congestion in the city is

very high because of large land use
due to roads used for transportation
and the same roads are used as
parking
spaces
for
different
establishments. This is because the
existing vehicles use a lot of space
since most of the taxicabs are
SUVs. The involvement of Grab-ABike in the city can reduce the use
of SUVs because of taxicabs and
create a big behavioural change on
the usual routes on the city.

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

Transportation, Economic
Development, and Land Use

EXPLANATION
Baguio has a good economic
development since it has a high
number of infrastructures in the
town proper and as well as
recreational areas that promote
employment. This economic activity
has high level of transportation
since
the
areas
for
these
infrastructures and the residential
areas are distant. With that, there
are citizens who purchase their own
cars because of good economic
activity and for their personal
comfort. Capacities of roads are
really narrow because of the area
that the road covers is smaller than
the main roads of other cities. And
also the city has a very limited

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

KEY POINT

EXPLANATION

Performance Measures

Incentives for the service can be

defined by how many times a driver
picked up a passenger as for
performance.
Also,
incentives
should be given for those drivers
who have given remarkable service
to
the
passengers
whenever
feedback is given.

CONCLUSION
Proposing

Grab-A-Bike would help the

transportation system in Baguio City. With
this, it could be an alternative choice for
individual passenger coming from different
areas in Baguio since it has been observed
that many taxicabs have single passengers.
And given the fact that most of these
taxicabs do not turn on their airconditioning units, Grab-A-Bike would
highly compete with these taxicabs. In this
way, a possible elimination of a significant
number of taxicabs could be seen. And by
this, the congestion on the roads of Baguio,
