Drive Line Balancing

The Unbalance Measurement System is designed such that it can be


integrated in a Roll Test Stand providing a fully automated drive line
balancing solution to the end of the vehicle production line. The Unbalance
Measurement System is based on the non-contact measurement of drive
shaft vibrations of completely mounted vehicles.

NVH (Noise, Vibration,


Harshness) Testing

The measurement and evaluation of vehicle noise, vibration, and harshness


levels is subject to the variations in road and climatic conditions. By
using a chassis dynamometer within a semi-anechoic chamber, the difficulty
in monitoring these parameters under controlled conditions an be overcome.

NVH Testing
NVH chassis dynamometers are available as standard in single roller, 42,
44, and independent configurations.
The rollers are available from 1.8m to 2.5m in diameter, running in
hydrodynamic or roller element bearings.
The roller assemblies are acoustically attenuated to minimise the effect of
noise generation and amplification. They can be either coated to representa
road surface or fitted with interchangeable road surface simulation shells.

Emissions tests require repeatable extremely accurate dynamometers to
allow the vehicle to be tested under accurately simulated road
conditions, whilst in the emission laboratory. The Chassis Dynamometer
needs to exceed the demanding performance criteria required by the US
standards. These criteria include:

High Speed Dynamometers

The dynamometer working compartment consists of special semi-circular shaped vanes cast into
stainless steel rotor and stators. Water flowing in a toroidal vortex pattern around these vanes
creates a torque reaction through the dynamometer casing which is resisted and measured by a
precision load cell. The dynamometer load is controlled by a 'butterfly' water outlet valve, operated
by a closed loop electro-hydraulic servo system. The power absorbed by the dynamometer is carried
away by the water in the form of heat.

Specification
The standard range of Froude HS dynamometers extends from 1680 kW to
15,000 kW in single machine configuration and up to 30,000 kW in tandem
configuration and speeds up to 30,000 rpm.
Torque measurement accuracy is 0.25% of full rated torque of the
dynamometer.
Speed is measured by a pulse pickup operating with a 60 tooth wheel and
gives accuracy of 1 rpm.

Universal Test Stands

The 2650mm (104") long under-frame supports the dynamometer, jackshaft,


and engine at 1000mm (39") centre line height above floor level, and
incorporates an integral drip tray and longitudinal tee-slots below the engine
position. It is mounted to the test cell floor via eight flexible mounts providing
vibration isolation to the surrounding area.
