INTRODUCTION

The world soil is derived from the latin word

SOLIUM which means the upper layer of the
earth that may be dug ; specially the loose
surface material of the earth in which the
plant growth.

The denudation of soil cover and subsquent

washingdown is described as soil erosion.

INTRODUCTION
Hillsides are usually above the frost
line and have air movement twentyfour hours a day, which is a big
factor in erosion.
Hillsides facing a southeast direction
get early morning sun, which dries
out the dew that set during night.

CAUSES OF SOIL EROSION

Natural factors
a)
wind erosion
b)
Rain erosion
) Human factors
a) Deforestation
b) Over grazing
c) Construction activity
d) Defective method of farming

MECHANISM OF SURFACE
EROSION
Rain drops hit the slope surface.
Impact of raindrop detaches the
particle of soil.
The runoff water flowing on slope
surface transports the detached
particle and may also contribute to
further detachment.

TYPES OF EROSION
Wind Erosion
Rain Erosion

WIND EROSION
Exposed slope of non-cohesive soil
are loose and dry.
Lack of shelter from wind.
Exposed surface without any
protection.
Erodes more rapidly if wind blows
constantly from one direction.
Faster the air flows, more erosion.

FACTORS CONTROLLING
WIND EROSION
Wind velocity.
Particle size of the material exposed
to wind.
Moisture content of soil.
Vegetative cover.
Successive planting and harvesting
of crops.

RAIN EROSION

Rain erosion is phenomena of

transporting of soil particle due to
water action.

FACTORS INFLUENCING FOR

RAIN WATER EROSION
Potential of flowing water.
Physical features such that
topography, gradient, embankment,
slope etc.
Soil erodibility governed by clay
content, particle size distribution,
compaction, permeability, shear
strength.

OBJECTIVE FOR EROSION

CONTROL

To prevent damage to land adjacent to the

road structure.
To reduce the soil loss from the land width
of road, which silts up drainage channel and
pollute rivers.
To contribute to the improvement of the
aesthetics of the landscape.
To protect and preserve the earth work of fill
or cut slope, ditches and drainage structure.

AGRONOMIC METHOD

Contour farming and strip cropping aim

at preventing water to run off and
retaining the rain water.
The use of cover crops serve to protect
soil against the force of rainfall.
Finally, mixed cropping aims at good
crop growth with optimal use of light,
water and nutrients. This minimizes the
chance of erosion.
13

CONTOUR AND STRIP

FARMING

14

NON-AGRONOMIC METHOD
Proper road side drainage system.
Soil cement stabilization.
Provision of aprons.

15

REINFORCED VEGETATION
Anchor reinforced vegetation system
used for erosion challenges.
The ARV system provides a
lightweight protection layer that is
securely anchored with earth
percussion anchors for long term
design life.

ANCHOR REINFORCED
VEGETATION

EROSION CONTROL
BLANKET

Erosion control blanket are used to

stabilize and protect disturbed soil from
rain drop impact and surface erosion.
These blanket consist of jute mesh.
These blankets are used at slopes.
The slope must be uniform and
relatively smooth before installation to
ensure complete contact with soil.
18

INSTALLATION

19

COIR GEOTEXTILES
Being biodegradable, it offers sustainable and
cost effective solution for soil erosion control.
Coir geotextiles prevent soil erosion with
each mesh acting as check dams.
Once the vegetation takes routes it will take
care of holding the soil together and just
prevent soil erosion.
When vegetation is complete the function of
coir geotextiles is over and same will
biodegrade itself into soil.

20

INSTALLATION

21

CONCLUSION
Erosion process is a natural
phenomenon accelerated by mans
activity, technical competency.
The planning and design of
preventive and corrective measures
is essential in obtaining economical
and environmental satisfactory.
