AMERICAN STUDIES
General Course Goals:
to introduce the student to the character of American history and culture both as
background to contemporary institutions and as a major force in world
development.
to place the development of American history and culture within a general
historical context in order to provide the student with a perspective of America's
place within the experience of mankind.
to foster an understanding of the interplay of politics, economics, and cultural
changes by observing the manner in which alterations in one bring on changes in
the others.
to teach the historical method as a means of critical thinking, including the
evaluation of conflicting testimony in assessing historical fact and assisting the
student in applying this historical perspective to the major trends examined.
to assist students in making connections and drawing together disparate materials
and experiences with reference to United States History and Current Events.
to foster the development of oral and written communication using claim,
evidence, and commentary through class discussions and paragraph construction.
