This football match between Yale and Princeton took place in 1879, when the sport was barely ten
years old. Since padding and helmets were nonexistent, serious injuries even deaths were a real
risk. Rules varied among the handful of college teams and were not standardized until 1882, when
the game more closely resembled rugby that the current version of modern American football.
