Plot Overview

The plot conflict is Esperanza doesnt

have a steady home so she has to be
moving from house to house. Her wish is
to one day have her own house which
she could proudly point at and say that
its hers. I feel like that would be a major
conflict in the story that she isnt getting
her dream house but the other conflict I
believe that there is in the story is that
she lives in a troublesome neighborhood.
The rising action in the story is when
Esperanza starts growing up and
realizing many things. Shes waking up
and seeing the reality of how life really is.
A second big rising action is mostly the
end i believe because she the three sister
say when she leaves shell be coming
back, she has to. At the end she even
says so herself that she must come back
for the people who cant. That is a very
high point that is at the end of the story
which has no answer.

Themes

Motifs and Symbols

Identify each major character in the

novel, describing the important traits that
both distinguish and characterize each
person. The major character is
Esperanza she is a young latin girl who
wishes to have a pretty house of her own.
A second major character is Alicia she is
also a young latin whose mom died and
now has to take care of her father and
siblings on her own. A third major
character is sally she is a girl a year older
than Esperaza who is hit by her father all
the times and claims that its not that bad.
A last major character is nenny
Esperanzas little sister whos through
Esperanza's eyes says she's really pretty.

Some of the major themes of the novel

are, wishing for things but most of the
time you dont get them just like
Esperanza wishing for a house which she
never got in the story. A second theme is
the dangers that there could be in a
neighborhood. This could be shown
because there would always been men
starring of saying something to pretty
ladies also the rape as said in the story.
Another possible theme is how
everybody's life is different and how many
things could be happening either good or
bad and in someone elses life another
thing could be happening at the same
time. This is shown in the vignettes of
different little stories all around the place.

Identify and explain some of the major

motifs and symbols in the novel. Some of
the major motifs in the novel are the
yellow, red and white heels Esperanza
and her friends wear. This could be a
possible motif because its colors could
represent the personality of each girl and
how the heels make them feel and how
they are seen through the eyes of other
people when they are wearing the heels.
A symbol is is the brown shoes
Esperanza describes she has. This could
be taken as a symbol to represent how
her life is. Her life of being poor but still
having enough to survive and a strong
spirit, long lasting like the shoes to keep
persevering in life.
